A coach's quality is measured by where the program was when he started and where it went under his control. If it started bad and got good, then he's good. If it started good and got bad, he's bad. If it started good and stayed good, he's probably good. If it started bad and stayed bad, he's probably bad.

I think this is a great point, but the original poster's point is that we need to wait until after next season to make this judgement. If next season is 10-2 or better, then Miles basically had one down season. If it is 9-3 or worse, then he is definitely trending downward.

Funny thing next year LSU can go 5-3 in SEC and finish with a worse record than this year.

With UNC so early in schedule you could see a Washington type game only they are more talented with a better coach who could pull out that game. LSU will still be figuring itself out and breaking in new players at critical positions along the lines and possibly a new coordinator.

Then a few weeks later LSU has to prepare for West Virginia which runs an option offense. This will prove to be another early test for LSU. This is another team LSU can not coast and expect to win like say ULL/LA Tech etc.

Mississippi State is obviously improving, they played LSU very well this year and should have come away with victory if you just look at the numbers.

Tennessee is improving and they have a very legit defense along with talented running backs. They just need a QB who can protect the ball and not make silly mistakes. Same can be said with Auburn that they improved from last year, can they make the next step?

Arkansas with Mallett and Ole Miss with Snead will still be a thorn in LSU side.

Then you have the big boys of Florida and Bama, the guys LSU is trying to catch again. After playing them tough this year can LSU expect more of the same?

That is essentially what I'm saying. It's not 100% about the W-L record (past, present, and future), but it's close.

I don't disagree that there is reason for concern. There is. I'm very concerned.

2008 was, by all accounts, an unacceptable year. 2009 has been much more grey. We see many flashes of 2008 and it scares the crap out of us. 10-3/9-4 is a pretty good season, but many see it as a veneer for a pretty mediocre team and/or staff.

Miles needs to show in 2010 that we are one of the big boys again. That's a very subjective determination, so I'm not going to hang a specific record or accomplishment on it.

In 2008, we were a mid-pack (at best) SEC team.

In 2009, we are at the top of the "... and all the rest" SEC teams. There's UF and Bama and then the rest of the SEC.

2010 needs to be an improvement over 2009.
