Such a fun song, but with dark lyrics.

Easier to list my least favorite songs

This is the correct answer... to me it just depends on the mood.. so many other great songs of his not even listed on here.

If you only know Isbell's stuff from southeastern you are really missing out on a ton of other good songs. Although that is his best album, his other albums still have several songs you don't wanna miss out on. If you haven't listened to all his songs, you really need to. I'm probably leaving something out... He also has some really good covers out there.

Here's Cigarettes and Wine from the first time I saw him perform... LINK

Here's Chicago Promenade... LINK

Really, you just need to listen to them all... but these are ones I listen to regularly and have found some great songwriting in each.

TVA
Decoration Day
Never Gonna Change
Dress Blues
Streetlights
The Blue
God Damn Lonely Love
Cigarettes and Wine
Down In A Hole

Chicago Promenade
Dress Blues

Hurricanes And Hand Grenades
In A Razor Town
The Devil Is My Running Mate
Sunstroke
No Choice In The Matter
Soldiers Get Strange
Streetlights
The Last Song I Will Write

Go It Alone
Codeine
Daisy Mae
Tour Of Duty
Cover Me Up
Stockholm
Traveling Alone
Elephant
Flying Over Water

Lol, as much as I love them all... it really does have to be something off southeastern at this point... Relatively Easy is just PACKED full of strong lines... It's like every line would be the best line in most songs on the radio. I'm a lyric guy... Musically I really can't say if it's great or not, but lyric wise it's fricking TOP NOTCH!!!

"Are you having a long day
Everyone you meet rubs you the wrong way
Dirty city streets smell like an ashtray
Morning bells are ringing in your ears

Is your brother on a church kick
Seems like just a different kind of dopesick
Better off to teach a dog a card trick
Than try to have a point and make it clear

You should know, compared to people on a global scale
Our kind has had it relatively easy
And here with you there's always something to look forward to
My angry heart beats relatively easy"

Danko/Manuel is probably my favorite, but the following are pretty close
Relatively Easy
Stopping By
Outfit
Codeine

Still can't believe I got to see him. For free yet in Houma of all places when Southeastern just came out. Was maybe 10 feet from the stage. It was great.

Your crazy imo, but to each his own. I think isbell's songs speak to everyone differently. Maybe you relate to those more. Here we rest is actually my least favorite album of his, but it's still really really good.

I really enjoy Here We Rest but it's not on SE's level to me.

I can't wait to see Jason at the Ryman this fall.

Not sure if there is a best, but "If it takes a lifetime" off the new album is a great song. You can listen to the entire album right now on NPR.org

I went to the Basilica Block Party last night in Minneapolis only to see Wilco, who were solid as usual. Jason Isbell opened and sadly I had no idea who he was until I yotubed a few songs the morning of the show. He was simply amazing. Thanks for all the suggestions, I am picking up "Southeastern" today and the new album had many great songs played last night!
