Time to make a thread to lump all questions to help educate new comers on the game. From History, rules and competition.

Hopefully this will help all the people wanting to embrace the beautiful game learn and with out any hostilities from anyone. This will be a BANTZ AND TROLL FREE ZONE. Q&A is highly encouraged

Also posters are encouraged to post and talk about their clubs history and greats.

To start it off I will do a basic break down of the leagues around the world

England - Has a four tier profesonal league system

Premier League - The top division
Championship - 2nd Tier
League One - 3rd Tier
League Two - 4th Tier

Any league below League Two is manly made of of semi-pro players who work regular jobs.

Major English Clubs

Manchester United - Most English Championships
Liverpool - Most trophies in English History
Arsenal - Biggest club in London also most FA Cups
Chelsea - Historic club that became a giant after being bought buy a Russian oil tycoon.
Tottenham Hotspur - London club back on the rise after years of mediocrity.
Manchester City - Traditional yoyo ( always changing divisions) club bought by Middle Eastern Sheikh . After lots of investment has turned them into a very good team.

There are two major cup competitions in England. The FA Cup which is the big one and the oldest cup competition in the world. It is open to any team in the country that wants to enter. Then there is the League Cup which is only open to teams in the four professional levels of English soccer.

Main Rivalries which are called Derby in soccer

Manchester United vs Liverpool - Two biggest clubs in the country and two cities that despise each other.
Arsenal vs Spurs - Both clubs based in North London and two fan bases that hate each other.
Liverpool vs Everton - The Liverpool Derby
Manchester United vs Manchester City - The Manchester Derby which has got even bigger now that City was bought by an owner with endless money.
Newcastle vs Sunderland - Two biggest clubs in the North East of the country. Pure hate.
Manchester United vs Arsenal - The two most successful teams in the Premier League Era have built a nasty rivalry the last 20 years

May help to explain ______side references to Derbys (also that they are pronounced dar-bees)for people as well. Basically just references to the river in the local area right? Do people in England really refer to it as such or is that something more pronounced in commentary during games?

France

Formed in 1930, the French first division is known as Ligue 1 (pronounced Lee-g Uh) and is generally accepted as the 5th best league in the world behind England, Spain, Italy, and Germany. In the United States, most Ligue 1 matches are televised by BeIn Sport and broadcast over the internet via Bein Sport Connect. major matches are aired on the network proper.

Major Clubs

Olympique Marseille- The most decorated French club, OM have won Ligue 1 on 10 occasions, the Coupe De France on 10 occasions, and were the inaugural European Champions League winners in 1993. With their first French title coming in 1929, and their most recent coming in 2010, OM has won at a high level across all eras. Their stadium, the Velodrome, has a unique shape similar to the old Sombrero in Tampa.

Olympique Lyon- France's team of the 2000's, Lyon won Ligue 1 7 straight years between 2002 and 2008. They did so by pioneering soccer's version of "Moneyball" now widely used across Europe. While they have fallen back to the pack a bit recently, they are still always in the mix to qualify for the Champions league and often do so.

Paris St. Germain Formed in 1970, PSG are the youngest major club in Europe and are the only club in France to win the domestic treble (Ligue 1, Coupe De France, and Coupe de la Ligue) in the same season. PSG are also the only major club in France never to have been relegated, remaining in Ligue 1 since their inaugural season in the top division back in 1974. Historically underachievers, PSG were bought by the Qatari Investment Authority in 2008 and are the current French Dynasty, closing in on their 4th straight Ligue 1 title this season while trying to break through to the later stages of the Champions League.

AS Monaco- Anomalous by their location, Monaco are allowed to play in the French system despite being an independent country. They have won 7 Ligue 1 titles in their history and recently have attempted a serious challenge to PSG's recent dominance which has been cut short by their owner's ugly divorce proceedings.

Saint-Etienne- A major force in French football in the 60's and 70's, Saint-Etienne has won more French titles than any other club and were European Cub Runners-up in 1976. While not what they used to be, they are still very completive domestically

Major Rivalries

Le Classique: PSG vs Marseille The French classico. Paris and Marseille are respectively the 1st and 2nd most populated cities in France and the rivalry between both cities originally had nothing to do with football, but because PSG and OM usually have the two biggest budgets in French football the game between the two takes on extra meaning both on and off the pitch.

Olympico: Olympique Lyon vs Olympique de Marseille Unlike Le Classique, the rivalry has no bad blood within it and, instead, stems from the competitiveness of the each club's players, managers, supporters, and presidential hierarchy. The rivalry is often cited as being particularly important as both clubs are of high standard in French football and the championship has been decided between the two on many occassions.

Nice work all around in here by everyone with a write up so far. I know most of the new people are dying for a comprehensive Sunderland write up so I'll get right to it after work.

This really is a great thread, but I am bitter that this is happening when my AVFC are doing this.

SCH, you can appreciate this. My Brit friend here's nephew in B'ham has been selected to be a villa mascot next match. My boy told his bruv he needs to let his son hand Martinez a transfer request by the dugout and be wearing an everton away shirt underneath his villa one when he does it. Would be so good

It's looking like I may be in NOLA the first weekend of March. Watching the North London Derby at Finn's just seems too good to pass up. What time do they open for the 6:45 game?

I know when I started watching back in 2009 or so, Wikipedia was really helpful in trying to figure out how all these competitions worked. I would encourage any noob to make use of Wikipedia when trying to figure out what's going on.

European Club Competitions

History

For those asking the bigger question of “Who is the best team in Europe?” you should look no further than the Champions League.

Originally called the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (or European Cup), the tournament was a knockout tournament featuring the winners of the previous season’s European Leagues to determine the best club team in Europe. The first cup was held during the 1955-56 season and was won by Real Madrid (who proceeded to win 5 times in a row, a consecutive record that still stands). Real holds the title of most successful club as well, with 10 titles, A.C. Milan is second with 7 titles, followed by Barcelona, Bayern, and Liverpool with 5 each.

The Champions League has expanded since inauguration, taking the name Champions League in 1992 and eventually expanding past just inviting each League’s Champion. For most clubs, qualifying for the CL brings in a bigger revenue stream to spur the club’s growth. More on the Competition below.

The other major European Club Competition is the Europa League, known formerly as the UEFA Cup. The competition was founded in 1971, growing out of a previous competition to promote international trade fairs, evolving from city-wide teams to clubs and mostly referred to as a “Runners-Up Cup”. The first title was won by Tottenham Hotspur over the 1971-72 season. Sevilla holds the record for the most titles at 4.

The Last Major Competition to note is the UEFA Super Cup, which takes place between the previous winners of the Champions League and Europa League at the beginning of the new season. Barcelona (2014-15 CL Winner) beat Sevilla (2014-15 EL Winner) 5-4 at the beginning of this season (August). Both Barcelona and Milan hold the most titles since the competition began in 1972, with 5 each.

Competition Qualification

- Qualifying for a competition is entirely different from where a club enters the competition.
- Each league is given a number of qualification spots for the CL and EL. The number of spots does change based on the competition.
-Champions League
--At least 1 team per European League, but entrance point varies.
--Better Leagues gain more places. This is measured by a coefficient calculated over the last 5 years of European play. See UEFA Country Coefficient.
--Spain, Germany, and England have 4 qualifier spots apiece. Italy, Portugal, and France with 3 spots, 9 other countries with 2 spots.
--Controversy was made earlier this year as Italy’s coefficient nearly became large enough to overtake England’s 4th spot.
--Also, last year’s CL winners qualify, along with last year’s EL winners if they reach a certain point in their domestic league, will also qualify.
-Europa League
--3 Teams from each European League will qualify. Entrance point varies drastically based on the Country Coefficient, and some teams can qualify by winning their country’s domestic cup instead of placing high in their league.
--Teams that also lose in the Champions League will qualify for places throughout the Europa League. In particular note the following:
---Losing the Third Qualifying Rd of the Champions League puts you into a Group in Europa
---Placing Third in the CL Group Stage puts you into the Knockout Phase.
- Both Competitions don’t begin properly until the Group Stage.
-Teams play Home and Home matches against a randomly paired opponent (the random pairing is known as a “draw”)
--CL has three qualifying rounds, along with a final “Play-off round” that will usually include well known teams.
--EL has the same number of rounds, but a large number of teams losing teams from the Champions League will enter at various stages as well.
-As with most competitions, winning is good, but being in the Champions League is much more prestigious than the Europa League.

The Group Stage

If you’ve managed to stay with me for this long, congratulations! You’ve just reached the meat and potatoes of the Competitions. After all of this the teams that made it through the playoff rounds join the teams that did well in the tougher leagues for the Group Stage.

-In both competitions, the Group Stage involves six matches with the other three members of your group, hosting each at Home once and each on the Road once.
-Groups are four teams that will play against each other during this stage
-8 Champions League groups
-12 Europa League groups
-Group draws happen near the end of August.
-Teams are placed into Pots based on the league they won, or their club coefficient, then Groups are drawn randomly.
-Teams from the same country will never be placed in the same Group.
-The group stages take place from September-December, at the same time as domestic Leagues and Cups
-Champions League matches take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
-Europa League matches take place on the Thursdays of the same week.
-After the six games, the Top 2 teams of each group enter their competition’s Knockout Round.
-The third place team in each Champion’s League group enters the Europa League Knockout Round.

The Knockout Round

Finally, something we Americans can relate to. The knockout round is the traditional playoff we have in every other sport in the U.S. Each round of the Knockout tournament consists of a random draw to determine opponents, and then a single home game at each venue. A combined score from both games is used to determine the winner. Tiebreakers are settled first by the “Away Goals Rule”, where the team that score the most goals at the opponent’s venue is the winner. If the scores are still tied, teams play an extra 30 minutes. If the game is still tied, a Penalty Shootout determines the winner.

The Champions League has 16 teams playing four rounds. Games are played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A single Final is played at a neutral location on a Saturday after the end of the domestic leagues and cups.

This year’s Champions League Final will be between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Milan, Italy at the San Siro on May 28th. Both teams are massive rivals that met two years ago in Lisbon, with Real winning 4-1 in Extra Time.

The Europa League contains 32 teams and plays five rounds. Games are played on Thursdays matching the Champions League rounds (The CL’s first round is spread over the EL’s first two rounds). Teams play a single Final, held at a Neutral location different from the CL Final.

This year’s Europa League Final will be between Liverpool and Sevilla in Basel, Switzerland at St.Jakob-Park on May 18th. This is Sevilla’s third straight Final, having won the previous two Europa Leagues.

Hopefully this massive info dump helps you to better understand European Soccer a little better.

This is absolutely not true. This board is rampant with people who troll, name call and reductively insult people they disagree with.
