Axis and allies is okay. Still a lot of luck involved.

Has anybody played Diplomacy? Thoughts?

Diplomacy is about the only classic game like that without much luck to it at all. It's much better with a full set of players (and some countries have better starting positions than others, but a good player can win with anyone) - and it can be a cut throat game of doublecrossing.

I played A LOT in high school, baw.

(ETA: Which reminds me - another classic that is hard to find/out of print - Kingmaker. Lots of folks are making games about Game of Thrones, but Game of Thrones is loosely based on the Wars of the Roses - and the best game of that is Kingmaker.)

Are there any groups that get together and play somewhere?

Not a true board game, but let me also mention Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. It's a game where one player uses a laptop to see a digital bomb. The rest of the players have to help them disarm it using manuals.

If you're around New Orleans, there are about 10-20 people that meet on Sunday nights (6-10ish) at Tubby and Coo's bookstore.

It can. Isn't necessary though. You just use a normal laptop.

Yeah. You really have to get in sync on the terms and task allocation.

Not to hijack to much. But what about some good two player board games?

Doesn't have to be extreme strategy or anything but something that is more substantial that just Uno or Yahtzee. My wife LOVES board games and thought it would be a good Christmas gift

For two player I really like Sequence and Stratego

Anybody still play D&D? Haven't played in years, checked out the manuals at the bookstore tonight. Kinda got the itch.

Hive patchwork and lost cities the card game are all two player games that I have enjoyed. Patchwork is probably the deepest of those three. I've been playing the shite out of lost cities although it's very straightforward. Haven't played as much hive lately because I found that strategies get a little stale.

+1 Patchwork
+1 Lost Cities

My favorite is probably 7 Wonders Duel. Nice little civilization-building game.
