Board games are my group's shite.

Dice Throne
Scythe (my personal favorite)
Brass Birmingham
Clank!
Gloomhaven
Ticket to Ride
Azul
Pandemic
Kingdomino
Castle Panic (with expansions - too easy without)
Code Names

Those are probably my favorite in our rotation.

Is the better version of King of Tokyo, but it's slightly more complex.

The last big four I bought that weren't your standard Monopoly/Yahtzee/Sorry/Trivial Pursuit type stuff were:

Pandemic
Ticket to Ride
Catan
Villainous

Picked up pandemic this afternoon, first of many I’m going to try so many I’m interested in from this thread. Thanks everyone who offered their opinions and suggestions.

How is munchkin? It always looks fun but I'm too scared to buy it because I'm not even sure what the hell the game is

I recommend:

Pandemic
Catan
Seven Wonders

It's fun, but really, really random, and gets a little convoluted with expansion packs.

If you're already playing Cata and Seven Wonders, there are better games that do similar things IMO.

Munchkin is very fun there is some strategy involved but like Freauxzen said there is definitely some randomness, We’ve enjoyed the Harry Potter version a little more than the original.

I enjoyed it the times I’ve played, but that’s been quite a while. Interesting mix of cooperative and competitive.

Ticket to Ride was another one I enjoyed. Seems with the rise in geek-culture and Kickstarter, there are more games than ever.

There’s one concerning birds called Wingspan that’s supposed to be pretty good, and it has an expansion. I’ve never played it, though.

The Space Marine Adventures games sold at Barnes & Noble are fun games based in the Warhammer 40k universe.

The whole industry is ate up with this stuff and it's driven me away from staying too close to it.

Now the term "Race" in fantasy games is causing all the rage. It's incredibly annoying. That and saying that Orcs are "dumb and strong," is also offensive. I don't know to whom, but it's stupid. All of the flavor is being removed from fantasy games.

I just find ticket to ride to be incredibly boring after the first 2-3 times playing it

Have you tried the UK map (which adds purchasable technologies) or Team Asia? Both of those take it up at least a slight notch.

The thing about TtR is that it's a good game for newbies or casual players, but yeah if you are experienced, it can be boring.

I'm also going to throw in a plug for the new Dune: Imperium game. It's a perfect 10 game for me. It's not too much more complex than a Catan or Dominion. Has a solid solo mode, plays 4 really well, and has a few tightly integrated mechanics.

I highly suggest anyone remotely interested in it track it down. It's replaced a lot of games for me.

Freauxzen had some great suggestions to introduce new people to modern boardgames. I would add:

Splendor
Just One
Mysterium
Wingspan (a touch more advanced)

Some of my favorites lately have been Beyond the Sun, Lost Ruins of Arnak, and Underwater Cities.

Just jump right in with both feet and get Advanced Squad Leader.

...I kid, I kid. Don't actually do that. Unless you live in the central Alabama area. Then that would be cool because I have literally no one to play the game with.

i'm not a heavy board game guy, but i do enjoy learning new ones from time to time. 2 that i've done a lot lately that are fun are Codename and Secret Hitler.

Monikers is a fun game.

There are 3 rounds. A deck of 60 or so cards.

In round one each team alternates in 1 minute segments, where one player gives their teammates clues to guess the word on a card. You try and get as many right in 1 minute. Teams go back and forth until the deck runs out.

In round two, using the same deck, you do the same thing but the clue can only be one word. Of course the goal is to try and remember as many of the cards as possible from the first round so you can quickly amass points.

In round 3 clues have to be visual and no words or sounds can be used….again with the same deck.

We’ve had a blast everytime we’ve played it

Risk Legacy. Each board is only good for about 14 or so games but it's a ton of fun and plays out different every time.

+1 to this. Seems a little complex at first but you can catch on the rules quickly. Nice twist on the strategy.
