I don't think signing Freddie to a 7-year deal cripples the franchise. He's still got 3-5 years of MVP level baseball in him.
Side note, it really sucks that we will probably get a third straight partial season for acuna if this lockout drags on

Benitez is a toolsy shortstop that has drawn some comparisons to a young Manny Machado. He’s big -- 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds -- and strong with signs of power now that project to increase as he develops. He can already drive the ball out of the ballpark and hits line drives to all fields with authority. He shows good bat speed and a solid approach at the plate. He should benefit from the daily instruction in a team’s academy once he signs, but there is already a lot to working in his favor. He’ll have to work on plate discipline and pitch recognition as he advances through the Minor Leagues, but that’s common for all young prospects -- domestic or international. On defense, he shows good footwork, soft hands and a strong arm that has a chance to be plus-plus potential. There’s also a chance he will be a plus runner. He trains with Venezuela’s Emiro Barboza, a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program.

Universal DH is good news for Ozuna. We didn’t have to watch it for the last 5 months of the season but a full season of Ozuna in LF probably would have taken a couple years off my life.

If we don't re-sign Freddie, it doesn't really matter what happens after that.
It would be a clear and abject failure, not only in terms of performance because Freddie is one of the top 5 hitters in the league right now, but also in terms of fricking over the entire fan base immediately after winning a World Series.
Any perceived positive that comes from not re-signing Freddie (and the only positive is saving money) is significantly outweighed by like a million negatives.
Freddie Freeman at 38 will still likely be an all star, give him the 6th year and give him the money that he wants.

I agree in large part, but if Freddie is wanting $200MIL and 6 years, then you shake his hand and say "Thank you" and wish him well and let him walk. You can't dedicate that much of your payroll to one guy, even Freddie, and considering he's 32. You still have to be fiscally responsible and not let one contract cripple your team. In the end, this is still a business and fans get caught up in the emotion(understandably) but you still have to keep a semblance of that side of it, as cold as it is.
Saying that, I still think the Braves resign Freddie somewhere in the 135-140MIL range for 5 yrs.and a vesting/team option for a 6th.

Successful franchises don’t write blank checks to guys for their >35 seasons based on fan sentiment. The dodgers and astros both let local favorites walk, and they have deeper pockets than we do

Except that we’d be paying more and for more years to a player who will never produce offensively at the level Freddie is now. We’d literally be paying more longer for an inferior player. I bet Freddie is still a better hitter 5 years from now than Correa will ever be.
Yes, he plays a more premium position, but Dansby is a better defensive SS. And good luck re-signing him after moving him to 3rd in his money year.

This isn't Albert Pujols getting a 10 year contract with the Angels when he was already on the decline.
This is paying for Freddie's 32-35 seasons when he will still be at the peak of his powers.

But then you have to keep in mind the age 36-38 seasons. Players' primes don't extend into their upper 30's anymore now that PED's aren't prevalent.
130-140 MIL for 5 w/an option for 6 would be fine. Anything more than that and you are starting to play w/fire.

I do agree with this, at least on the years. And I agree with Dale Murphy’s take earlier, too. Freddie’s swing is so short and compact (and repeatable) that it’s going to play well past most other guys’ do when they get that age. Not to mention his plate discipline and just the pride he takes in being a professional hitter—I just can’t see a steep decline in his production.
That said, winning the World Series may have changed what he wants. He may feel like he doesn’t owe the Braves anything else (he doesn’t) and want to spend the rest of his career somewhere else. Maybe he wants to get back to the West coast and signs with San Diego. Maybe he dreamt of playing in the Yankee pinstripes. Maybe he’s got his eyes set on the HOF and thinks he may need to wind up with more career HRs than he’s on pace for in Atlanta and that short porch in Yankee Stadium is really appealing. Who knows. But he’s a grown man who has earned the right to play where he wants. He can choose to leave without it being anything the Braves did or didn’t do wrong (except maybe having wrapped this shite up last offseason).

I agree w/this. Broski is a really good poster but when it comes to stuff like this he is more drama filled than my 6 y.o.daugher.
