About to get a new place on 3 acres. The way the yard is set up I really don’t want to build a fence. Have 2 dogs. One is 10 and the other is still a puppy. I’ve been shopping around online and I think our best option is going to be one of the ones that you can set the perimeters on via gps. But those are really expensive. Does anyone have these and what’s your experience with them? Do I have any cheaper options? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

I used dog guard in thibodeaux. They came to prairieville and did 2 acres for 2400 I think. The line is buried and it only took them about a half day. Definitely worth it. The collar uses a battery and they mail a new one I believe every six months. They will also help train the dog the first day. I’ve been very satisfied so far.

it’s a life changer, for you and for the dogs
my dogs have free reign of 6 acres all day long, and the house thru a dog door.

we can leave them alone with peace of mind, and they can be dogs

no, free reign
my dogs rule their kingdom and all are subject to their favor or wrath (when I’m not home)

Just make sure the family is all on the same page when it comes to training, etc. I'm sure the technology is better at this point, because we had the wired(underground) one. This was 20+ years ago.

When I was in high school, I put in an entire underground fence around our yard. Not a huge yard by any means, but probably 3/4 of an acre. We did it because our dog(chocolate lab/ridgeback mix) kept jumping our 4 foot fence in the backyard. Then we raised it to 6 and he would still get over it. By the way, when you're training, make sure you don't get shocked by the collar, if that's what you're using. Holy lord, I still remember that. It hit my middle and ring finger knuckles on my right hand and shot straight up through my shoulder.

Anyway, had the dog trained, everything was going well. One day a few weeks in, my mom decided to take the dog for a walk and forgot all about the fence. She drags him through it - I say drags because as soon as the collar started beeping, he started pulling back. Well, she pulled him all the way through and I guess he realized....well, that wasn't that bad....so at that point it was done. He would just haul arse through the fence and kinda shake his head when the shock hit and off he went.

I think I spent two full weekends digging a tiny trench and laying the wire down for that.

I bought the Petsafe wireless system about 3 years ago and it's still working great. It's about 300 bucks. You can dial the range from a very small circle to almost a 2 acre circle. All I did was plug it in, walked my dog around the perimeter for about 20 minutes with it set to just vibrate and the lowest shock setting. Once he knew the perimeter I cranked up the shock setting. After that I haven't had to worry about it at all for the ENTIRE 3 years. Other than changing the collar battery about every 6 months. No burying fence or anything, just plug the module into the wall. Highly recommend.

One thing to remember, that fence MAY keep your dog in but it won't keep other dogs or people or other animals out so yours might be attacked.

I'm not willing to take that chance with my dogs. So I am putting up a physical fence.

Has anyone tried the collars that are gps linked and you set a geofence on an app around your property? You can also set a fence around other locations (campsite, friends house) as needed as well. I’m looking into these for my next dog.

I'm on 4 acres and have been running the PetSafe wireless fence for 5 years: works great!

My standard poodle has managed to memorize how long the batteries last, and the little shite will test the boundary to see if it beeps so he can visit the neighbors LOL so just stay on top of those batteries in the collar!

I got the SpotOn collar after a recommendation from a friend of mine. I’ve had it for 2 months now for my pup and I am happy with it so far. They’re on their second generation of collar which is supposed to be a bit more robust than the last. I did have an instance where it starting beeping indoors (under a metal porch) but they now have a feature that allows you to designate indoor areas on the map so that it won’t do that. If you take it off of forest mode, it’s supposed to detect when the pet is indoors, but I haven’t taken it off of forest mode.

After pricing out what I needed for 6 acres, the price of the SpotOn wasn’t much different from what it would cost me to wire one. Paying someone to come in and do it would have been more.

I also like the idea that I can sell the collar if I end up not liking or needing it. It’s also nice that I can set a boundary at the camp or anywhere else, because you don’t train the dog on the boundary, you train him on the alert tones of the collar.

One thing to note is that you have to charge it every day. This wasn’t as big of a deal as I thought, we take it off at night anyway so we just throw it on the charger. It wouldn’t work for a dog that stays outside 24/7.
