With the better staff I think LSU defense will be better than last year. If we add depth to the DL which CBK is doing. LSU's offense can score against anyone. We will have a more balanced attack this year with this OL. Expect to run the ball more than last year. We have more depth and experience in the secondary and Perk and the LB's are way better than average. The more aggressive attacking defense also will be to our advantage. The LSU defense will be the surprise of the year along with our running game.

Last year, we couldn’t help putting the ball in the end zone with big chunk plays on offense. This year will be different. We’re going to establish a heavy run game by imposing our will with the OL. We’ll still see Nuss sling it, but I think we’re going to be eating a lot more clock this year. This in turn, will give our defense minimal time on the field.

This, this is what Kelly wants to do with his offense, follow everywhere he’s been, he utilizes his strengths, always has. Kelly likes the TE position. He will run 11 Personnel, one RB and one TE, but don’t be shocked to see formations with 12 and 13 more often. He has a very good OL, four of those guys could be headed to NFL camps this time next year. Having true TE’s, both good in blocking and catching, are a major plus. Kelly likes a player that does his job, well rounded with the position, why do you think Josh Williams, a WalkOn, gets so much playing time?

If you remember, against aTm last season, we went with 14 personnel, 1 RB and 4 TE’s. It was 7:57 in the 3rd quarter.

I think we will have a better defense, in part b/c we simply cannot do worse and in part b/c I assume this is a better staff. I am not sure we are significantly better talent wise than last year.
Problem is, that we are going to be weaker on offense. Our offense last year was the best in the country (or close) with a Heisman QB (2nd pick) and two first round/ Biletnikoff level WR's leaving. The offense will not perform at the level of 2023, although it certainly could be in the top quartile. With an improved running game, possible top 10%.
I am not sure this gives us a playoff level team or a 10 win team.

I think its odd how LSU managed to have 3 D-linemen drafted with that trash defence last year; to me, it says we had talent that wasn't properly coached.

I mean….. when you have 3 different D-line coaches in 3 years, AND…. The last of those 3, never coached a single game, because of illness….. well… you get a really poorly coached D-Line. It was painfully obvious to pretty much everyone that the D-line had no coaching experience or leadership.

All I want is for them to be like the 2022 defense (minus sucking in the first half of the game). You don't have to be great just hit hard and make stops when you need it most.

Somebody sell me on the defense this year. Strengths/weaknesses, players to look out for, and overall expectations. Football.

not really

Wingo was hurt a lot
Jefferson was good when he got to play
Smith was drafted in potential but was coming off an injury

and then our starting DE/Edges were absolutely terrible.

We have to wait to see how they address lack of DT. If they address it well in portal I think the main areas to look at is how well the coaching staff develops our players. I think everyone could see last year coaching was an issue for players. Smith was a 2nd round pick so clearly NFL sees potential in him that he wasn't getting at LSU.

Peoples and Davis are probably the 2 best DL coaches we could've asked for and Baker always makes his LBs good. It's largely the same players as last year but +1 year experience for the younger guys. I'm hoping to see the younger inexperienced guys take the next level with coaching.

CB will be interesting to watch because it has tons of inexperience there. I would've preferred a better hire for CB coach I'm not high on Raymond. I know his history here but he hasn't fielded a decent secondary in forever so he's definitely questionable. S is a big question mark but the positive here is the young guys looked good in spring.

I didn't understand how the snaps were given out along the DL/ edge last year. Jefferson, Shand and Swinson should've got way more time than they did.

Strength…
New and very much improved defensive coaching staff!
The staff will have three bonafide defensive players to build around…
- Perkins
- Womack
- Whit Weeks

Weakness…
Defensive Tackle

Hopefully…
-Transfer Portal upgrades at DT
- improved play by coaching, development and scheme.

Weakness Safety as well as DT. If your weak again on the backend it will be another long season for the defense. Hopefully some of the younger guys will step up Toviano, Jackson or others and beat out Major Burns and Sage Ryan . Another season of Burns flexing after giving up a 20 yard gain on 3rd and 10 and Ryan missing tackles will lead to another disaster.
