Been going back through and watching on Amazon Prime. Still the GOAT animated comic book series and its been almost 30 years since it was released. That combination of 1940-1950s and 1990s modern technology makes it timeless. That darker film noir aesthetic. One of the best collections of villains.

Any word if its going to be part of the DC Universe section on HBOMax? Can't seem to find any evidence.

Yes, I couldn’t wait to get home after school and watch it on fox 44.

Nothing really comes close when it comes to the perfect execution of the comic genre. I didn't even care that I was 25 watching this during afternoon kids cartoons.

I have this show to blame for ruining most 80s cartoons for me. It’s that fricking good. Just the characters, animation, fight scenes, and the writing are all top notch. It is debatably the best animated action series of all time.

I enjoyed XMen and Spiderman but obviously BTAS was on another level

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill deserve a ton of love for really being the driving force behind this show IMO

I loved this show because my mom hated it, thought it was too dark for young kids to watch. And she was right but that’s why it’s classic, ahead of its time, and stands up so damn well years later.

I re-watched it in my 30s and don't have a kid as an excuse and it is still by far the best animated series.

X-Men is probably second but there's nothing that really comes close

Did anyone else have the toys? Probably played a role in how much it affected us as children. Golden age of animated comic shows.

Batman: TAS

XMen can be a rough rewatch at times but it made that whole title cool as hell and introduced an entire generation to one of Marvels most nuanced runs. I like it mostly because it tried and at least succeeded in making that whole franchise cool, if not also introducing one of the best cartoon intros into popular culture and making Gambit a total badass

Agreed. Loved Spiderman but Batman was just crazy good.

No doubt.

Greatest animated show ever.

As much as I liked X-Men, though, Gargoyles is probably #2. That storyline front to back is kind of phenomenal for a kids show.

Timm's designs and Dini's writing were major reasons, but Andrea Romano's voice casting put Batman and the DC series that followed above everything else.

She didn't go with cliched heroic and evil voices. They were nuanced castings that made you scratch your head, but proved to be iconic. Fans hated the casting of Tim Daley and Clancey Brown as Superman and Luthor. The thinking was that the cartoon Superman should always have a deep, booming voice, and Luthor didn't need a roughhouse voice like the Kurgen or Hadley from Shawshank. Turns out the strong, caring voice of Daley and Brown's restrained beast voice were just what the characters needed.

And then the great decisions continued with Batman Beyond. fricking Eric from Boy Meets World as the CyberPunk neo-Gotham Batman. He killed it.

I wish more people were like the clock king. Say what you want about villains, at least they're always on time.

I want this series on disc.

I got this bad boy when it first released:

They have a standard bluray series as well. I'd wait for it to go on sale though

The episode where Harley Quinn kidnaps Batman and gloats to Joker is up there. Probably one of the single darkest episodes.

Though one of the best young Conroy Batman episodes came in JLU with Ace.

Is it the single greatest animated series ever? Well you can make a hell of an argument for it. To take nothing away from series like Avatar: The Last Airbender or Clone Wars.

What sells this for me is the level of quality as it went on. B:TAS was great. The Superman spinoff was great. JLU was great. I don't think any series can match the consistent excellence of those shows.

My favorites as a kid were always “Almost Got I’m” and “Mudslide”

A lot of people who worked on both of those shows started off on Batman: The Animated Series. Avatar told a trilogy perfectly and may be a slightly better action series since they had a ton of martial arts coordinators in the writers room and the animation studio, but other than that I find them to be equals.

But there is no Avatar or Clone Wars without Batman. Batman juggled a ridiculous amount of characters and made them great and sympathetic more than either Avatar or Clone Wars. It set the precedent for the great animated series to come.
