In Dragon Ball lore isn’t Goku a “hero” bc he’s brain damaged?

He was a typical saiyan but then hit his head on a rock as a toddler & became the good natured hero we love.
That’s got to be top 3 weirdest backstory for a mainstream hero right?

He hit his head when his ship crashed on earth and forgot his mission to destroy earth.
Then Gohan raised him to be a good natured being and became the Goku we know from the series.
Goku is supposed to represent a Japanese rural "hick"(whatever Japanese people call their rural citizens). He's supposed to be simple and dopey. Although I'm not sure I like his complete tank in the newest series. In DragonBall as a kid it was hilarious, and the series overall had a completely different tone, then Toriyama turned up the seriousness in Z and Goku shed the backwoods idiot routine (mostly).
Super returning him to the DragonBall stupidity was annoying.

Also a fun note on Goku. In the Japanese version of Dragonball, he is less of a traditional hero. It is why some of his antics in the show confused western fans.
In Japan Goku simply wants to fight strong opponents and get stronger. Saving Earth is just secondary for him. He repeatedly left his family to train. He healed villains so they can fight at full strength. He allowed them to reach their final form and cause further destruction.
Goku is not a true hero, he is merely the main character and is pure hearted.

Pretty standard in anime unless you’re 17 in Super

Not all Saiyan's are inherently evil. He was sent to earth to take it over yes but as you said hit his head and forgot his mission. His grandpa Gohan finds him and raised him to be a good person

Yeah we're seeing in the recent manga continuation of Super that Bardock definitely wasn't evil.

I forget, but wasn't the whole "Alien hit in the head" thing kind of a giant retcon by Toriyama for DBZ?
If I remember correctly, in the original Dragon Ball, Goku was basically just a weird orphaned kid with a tail who rode a cloud, right? The whole Saiyajin origin story was only added at the beginning of DBZ. It's such a genius premise, though.
It opened up the story so much.

a weird orphan kid who accidentally killed his own grandpa and nobody had the decency to tell him until he was fighting Vegeta like 20 years later

Goku is just the monkey king in anime form.

Unless they changed the story, I'm pretty sure Goku was "evil" when he was on earth and living with Gohan but he did fall one day and hit his head on a rock.
That's the story I grew up with.

Saiyan babies were sent to planets to be destroyed and sold on the market. Earth was seen as a planet full of weaklings. His mission was to look upon a full moon and turn into a giant ape, this is how the saiyans take planets.
The problem is that earth still had powerful humans such as Roshi who already defeated the ape form Goku in the tournament.

Toriyama was on some shite. To stop monkey Goku, Roshi blew up the fricking moon during the tournament (rip monster Carrot) and then in the next tournament a reverse werewolf was pissed at Roshi because he couldn't turn into a human anymore so he had him look at krillins bald head to get him to change...

Roshi in a way was a God in marital arts on earth. Not many could beat him because he trained his body above the limits of man. The only ones that were superior were king Piccolo, Korrin and Kami before Goku arrived.
