Thousands of film and television writers will go on strike starting Tuesday, throwing Hollywood into turmoil as the entertainment business grapples with seismic changes triggered by the global streaming TV boom.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) called its first work stoppage in 15 years after failing to reach an agreement for higher pay from studios such as Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) and Netflix Inc (NFLX.O). The last strike lasted 100 days and cost the California economy more than $2 billion.

Y’all do realize what happened last time right? Prepare for even worse movies and TV all because apparently Netflix was the lone hold out

A lot has changed in 15 years. Back then it deeply impacted the quality of 22 episode season cable shows we watched like Lost.

Now most of us don’t watch cable series. So what will this one do? Expand the gap between seasons of something we watch? Meh, Covid just did that and we all survived.

Yet you comment on the movie/tv board because the truth is you watch it…so there is that. If you didn’t watch television why would you even come here. So it will affect you too.

The rise of reality TV getting kicked into a higher gear was the biggest unintended consequence last time.

They couldn’t have picked a worse time to do this. People don’t care about tv like they used to. They’ll just watch more Tik Tok.

Maybe in the meantime, we can all play catch-up on the shows that come out every week that working people can’t just sit around and watch 24/7

Exactly. The amount of content people have via streaming is essentially unlimited. I don't think writers have the leverage they used to.

ChatGPT, write me a five character dramedy set on the moon in the year 2100 = Emmy.

I probably have 50 series already in my queues and over 100 movies.

I can hold out a few years.

The last writers strike started reality TV boom. Hopefully this strike will kill it.

I barely watch any new movies and tv shows anyway.

How does this affect directors who write their own movies? Like QT, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan?
