for population loss.

WGNO article about LA population loss in 4 parishes

The U.S. Census Bureau released a report on Thursday ranking the counties with the largest population losses in 2022.

Four of the top 10 counties are located in southeast Louisiana and surround New Orleans.

Lassen County, California saw the largest population decline of 6% followed by St. John the Baptist Parish in Louisiana with a 5.1% decrease.

Terrebonne Parish and Plaquemines Parish, both located in Louisiana, were also ranked third and fourth with population declines of 3.9% and 3.3% respectively.

Louisiana's St. Charles Parish was ranked eighth with a population decline of 2.7%.

Louisiana as a state saw a population decrease of 36,857 people between 2021 and 2022, with a current population of approximately 4.6 million.

The COVID-19 pandemic and devastating hurricanes are cited as the reasons for the steep population drop in Louisiana, exacerbating a long-term downward trend.

I hate it for them. I love it down there. Anyone have family members out there contemplating or any of you baws/bawettes know what is going on besides Ida?

My husband left Terrebonne Parish over 20 years ago

Ida finished it for the rest of his family

That's a shame. What will be left behind will be crackheads and a fishing industry. I know some really good people from there.

I mean they’ve been hit with how many major storms in a few years?

What do people expect? I’m sure Lake Charles is up there as well.

Lake Charles was hit way harder and more often but I think one of the factors is that when you wanted to go to town, New Orleans was a major area for entertainment getaway. Now they probably are turned off by NOLA and feel trapped to stay in the small town life without options. I mean, I get it but it's bittersweet.

ETA: That plays second fiddle to Ida as others have mentioned but I am sure NOLA degradation factors in somewhere.

Terrebonne not as coonass as you think. Also no oilfield, a hurricane and no ability to insure.

This is probably a major issue people north of I10 don’t realize.

Insurance has doubled, add that to inflation and working people probably can’t afford to live there anymore.

East side of the parish is automatically disqualified.

There is a lot of industrial work and probably more jobs on the way in that area. Might keep big numbers from leaving

Lafourche also.

Although some of the coonass around here could bury most with their intellect, ingenuity and all around abilities.

A lot of us can read books and all of that shite.

Thick books with big words two.

I only wear socks with my city going shoes. Never with my shrimp boots.

I keep my walking around cash in a genuine Alligator Money clip in my front pocket. Wallets hurt my back.

My family is still in Chauvin. They “can’t leave the bayou.” I’m like ok, continue to suffer from storms and ignorance

The east side of Terrebonne Parish includes Bourg, Montegut, Pointe aux Chenes, and Chauvin. It’s pretty Coonass down there.

I grew up there and miss it often, but especially since Ida don’t think I’ll ever get to make it home again.
