According to the LWF website only 1 detection this year (Tensas Parish). Last year there were 11 detections which were all in Tensas. Meanwhile the government still will not allow hunters to feed in most of Madison and Franklin parishes. Thoughts?

Baiting deer shouldn't be legal anywhere.

That’s another topic. This is topic is parishes that have not had any detections still not being able to bait. Small feed stores in these areas are now closing. One owner of a feed store in Delhi told me his profits have are down 60% since ban. He is now having to sell his store.

If deer corn is making up 60% of a feed stores profits, there are other problems

I’m in the CWD zone. Keep the baiting ban.

I hate to be THAT guy, but that's not my problem and does not affect me.

These results look to bare out that something worked, probably lack of baiting. We as outdoorsman should see this and just stop on our own. Fat frickin chance of that happening, so the state needs to do it.

Looks like there were more samples turned in this year vs last which surprises me. Glad they only found one this year. Given that, I wonder what LDWF’s next move will be??

Same. My assumption when reading the OP was that people quit having their deer checked in hopes they could start baiting again.

That is what the purpose of this thread was supposed to be. What will be next steps in these areas?

They should expand the policies that worked in Tensas.

I can only assume, but I think LDWF will at least maintain things as they are. It would be a stretch for LDWF to say “feed and export bans work” as justification for expanding the CWD zone as it exists today. Maybe those WQ guys kilt all the hot deer last year.

I'm with Downshift.

Ban supplemental feeding.

quote:

Baiting Affects Deer Behavior
Whatever the intended purpose, bait and feed sites congregate deer in unnaturally high densities and keep them returning to small areas. This human-altered scenario is very different from a deer herd’s natural behavior. Depending on time of year, they typically exist in small family and bachelor groups distributed widely across the landscape. This evolved social behavior allows them to capitalize on food and cover sources while minimizing crowding, stress, habitat degradation, and disease transmission.

deer association

For the longterm health of the herd, it needs to be done away with.

I'd like to see them open it up. With the drought this year and food plots not coming up proper, Freeze from couple weeks ago, the deer could use some protein right about now..

Winter Quarters is in the process of killing 250 deer between now and Feb 15. And it's my understanding that other clubs in the area are having to kill X amount of deer. Point being, the CWD count is not over.

And as for corn contributing to the spread pf the disease, maybe it is, maybe it's not. You have to remember that CWD came from states that did not allow supplemental baiting. So it's certainly not the cause of it.

We don't discuss that here. We blame the entire thing and many other problems on supplemental feeding, killing snakes, and riding your ebike to far in..

Interesting how some are starting to see a link between glyphosate and CWD. While I haven't seen any peer reviewed stuff on it there is some logical research to suggest it. Of course almost everyone is anti glyphosate now will be interesting to follow it....

Make it statewide.

Would help curb the hog problem and stop a lot of people griping about bears tearing up their feeders.

Doesn’t affect the hog problem.

Wouldn't do a fricking thing to the hog problem. Yea hogs will hang around readily available corn, but it's not like they need it to thrive. They will just destroy some other food source. If anything corn helps to control hogs as you can put it out, congregate and kill them.
