First off I’m aware of the shortage and difficulty dealers of having any decent inventory. With that being said I wanted to take this time to really think about/compare various SXS so when there is a return of options I will be ready. Must have features: At least 3 people capacity (front bench or extra row), dump/tilt bed, and most importantly reliable. I will use this 90% of the time at the deer camp (Mississippi hills) with the other 10% riding the kids in the yard. Have been recommended the Honda Pioneer 1000-5, Polaris Ranger 1000, and the Can Am Commander, but seems there isn’t much of a consensus. Any insight or feedback is greatly appreciated.

I bought a ranger 500 a couple years ago and have been extremely pleased. Did have to replace the starter solenoid a few weeks ago though. Easy 10 min job

The pipeline company I work for bought a Honda Pioneer 1000 a few years ago that is used to ride our ROW surveying and whatnot. Has just over 2000 miles on it now and so far has had zero issues. It hasn’t necessarily been abused and has been serviced at regular intervals but for damn sure has been used. So far it has been outstanding machine. Tons of power and will surprise you in the mud. I like the fact that it is shaft driven and has no belts like the rest. Honda gets my vote and that’s about all I got.

I recently went through this

Went with the 1000-5. Great engine but more importantly the fold down seats were important to fit my family when we’re all at the camp.

Definitely didn’t want the extra row of seats with other brands

True. It has two kevlar clutch packs which cost 10x as much to replace. And for about a three year stretch made polaris belt drives look like a good idea.

Thankfully the newest clutch update seems to have fixed the issue. I just wish they'd had fixed it when I had mine.

Most reliable and ugliest: Mule Pro
Reliable with great power but too new for me to trust yet: Yamaha Rmax.
Reliable with questionable clutch: pioneer 1000 (in Honda's defense I think they finally fixed it)
Reliable with only 50hp and an old design: viking.

Reliable if you stay on top of your maintenance: ranger, general, yamaha x2.

Reliable but underpowered as all hell: pioneer 700.

A damned crapshoot and you never know if it's going to be made of paper mache or an unbreakable alloy of adamantium and mithril: canams.

That's a brief synopsis of the multiseaters.

Given time, the RMax will probably be the best bike to be released in a long time. I just want to make sure they don't break before I buy one.

Have a 2017 Yamaha Viking. Zero issues and still runs like a champ.

I went through this last summer. Drove them all, honda 1000-5, kawasaki mule pro, ranger 1000. Bought the Can Am defemnder 10. Love it. No issues, great ride, tons of power and does everything my buddies rangers do at the lease (West Texas). Mine is easier to get in and out of though.

I do too.

My next one is a Ranger crew Northstar.

I'm done with mosquitos biting me when in in the woods.

2018 Ranger 570 here. No mechanical issues. I do have a steering link boot with a tear in it, but hasn’t changed a thing yet. Only complaint is the 570 is louder than the bigger engine options. Plenty of power for a hunting rig.

My only recommendation is to be mindful what you are going to use it for. I know of several people that bought big sxs and then found they they had trouble getting around the woods with them. Each of them said buy a smaller one.

If you want one primarily for work purposes take a look at the Kubota line, I own a crew cab with a hydraulic bed. It’s been great so far. I would not recommend it if you are looking for something sporty.

Had a ranger 900 bought it new, couldn’t keep it running after two years. Probably had 10k in repairs In it after 6 years. Bought defender to replace it this year. Like that so far but haven’t ran it enough to know long term. We have a 18 pioneer 700 on the farm that gets used every day. Has 9,000 miles. Only have had to change the brake pads. Doesn’t have a ton of power or speed, but will surprise you in the mud and just simply doesn’t break.

My RMAX4 1000 has held up well. Everything from really muddy, to medium crawling in Moab, to sand. I have 2 sets of tires and it is a tank.

I want to take it elk hunting this week but because of room, I will probably end up taking the Kodiak 700.

Following. Have been using a gas powered golf car at the lease, but need something more off road capable. The problem is a I need the ability to seat 4 people, but don't want limo like the ranger crew. What about the Tyrex-4? Any thoughts?

The RMAX and Teryx are similar style. But the RMAX can come with the 1000 cc.

Same here. I have a ranger 900 and while I can not complain 1 bit I would be buying a Can-am Defender if I were in the market right now.

Personally, I will still recommend a ranger as I have not have a single issue with mine and it's been thru the ringer. But I do think the defender has better ride quality, build quality, options, and user/rider comfort.

I've owned a Can AM defender HD10...a Polaris 900 and a honda Pioneer 1000. All were single front bench seats.
All primarily used at hunting camp in slop, steep hills and running the back roads. All fairly loaded out with winches, roofs, oversize tires, etc.
The can am had the strongest engine and was the most comfortable to drive and had the best storage features. Nice machine but started having clutch/tranny issues after 2 years.
Polaris 900 just seemed to deteriorate the quickest and everything just got loose.
Pioneer 1000 was the most solid long term. It stayed tight the longest and seems to burn less fuel. Fit and finish on the honda is MILES better than the other two. I still own the Honda and would most likely buy it again.
