Check out (and share) this photo of a Pogie net after it’s been pursed.

It’s a bit blurry and looks like it was taken with a fax machine, but Ray Charles can see that there are PILES of large dead predator fish in this net.

Remember this image, or the other images of dead fish littering our beaches, the next time somebody says they don’t kill much bycatch. This is one set… they set their nets 15,000+ times a year on our coast.

There's a BIG vote on Thursday on the 1-mile buffer at LDWF in BR at 9:30 am. (2000 Quail Dr.) Show up in person or send comments to comments@wlf.la.gov. We cannot continue to allow this in Louisiana's shallow waters, on the spawning grounds for so many of our critical species.

We deserve better than this.

See this LINK for more information on it.

Having trouble doing this. Says it’s not a valid email address, and it’s definitely not a link.

I would love for the good catching fish to have more food, but I can't see what you say the image shows.

Well Jeff Landry's campaign took money from Omega Protein...like alot of money....100K

Blake Miguez- Moon Griffon's Hand Picked Candidate for Senate Dist 22 took money from Omega Protein. His family business Miguez Fuels supplies most of the fuel to Omega Protein fleet of boats.

These guys buy protection and they do so at the highest levels of La government !

It shows the bycatch of larger fish in a pogie net. Pogie fishing is a ridiculously stupid use of a resource. You are taking the primary food source (fertilizer if you will) away from the bottom of the marine food chain for use in the supplement industry. Yet, you can get these same mass produced supplements naturally by simply eating the fish that depend on the menhaden (pogies) for ITS food source. Every single thing in that chain above the pogie is negatively affected by its removal from the ecosystem. Its insanity at its finest.

This is before we even broach the issue of bycatch, which is what the photo is showing.

Daybrook fisheries in Empire, La is owned partly by Westbank Fisheries, a South African company. They donated $200,000 to Jeff Landry’s PAC.

Sheesh....we screwed..
Honestly we need an investigative reporter to pick up on this. Have some low level staffers run down all the individuals and companies associated with the Pogie industry that have donated money and how much. Not sure how else to fight this kind of problem. .. and yes its a huge problem... this 1 mile buffer should be a start, but its probably as far as we will be able to take it with the kind of money the industry is spending on politicians.

Nine million wasted fish might seem like a lot, but not when compared with the overall menhaden population, which is immense and shows no signs of decline, said Ben Landry, a spokesperson for Omega.

“Sounds like Chicken Little to me,” he said. “This is a fish that numbers more than 100 billion in the Gulf. And there’s concern for 9 million fish? That’s a bit hyperbolic.”

Take a guess on who Ben Landry's brother is.

Hint: well, no...I think y'all can figure that out.

Typical spokesman avoiding the true issue. We care about all the fish y’all rape from us. Not just pogies. Also, if they are that abundant then they should have no problems going out a mile.
