I am fighting the losing battle with torpedograss right now and I'm trying to figure out my next move. I am contemplating the scorched earth approach and replacing the centipede with zoysia, but I've never actually seen a good zoysia lawn to know if that's really an option for me.

Does anyone know of a zoysia lawn around BR that I can take a look at?

I have but very few; most zoysia lawns I've seen aren't great

I have been pretty successful beating back torpedo grass with quinclorac in zoysia grass.

This is what is recommended by LSU and other reputable sources.

Unfortunately, I have centipede, so it isn't an option. shite puts you between a rock and hard place.

That's my biggest concern. The other is excessive maintenance.

We have a few accounts that have Empire zoysia. Some look better than others. It does best in full sun for sure. There are a few decent named varieties of Bermuda if you choose to go that route

It's as high maintenance as St. Augustine (I hate St. Aug)

if there was a chance to re-sod your yard, what would you put down? My centipede lawn looks like crap all yr no matter what fertilizer I put down. Also our subdivision has a bad problem with torpedo grass.

You are probably cutting it too short FYI. Go longer and pull the torpedo grass by hand. It's not that hard to do, it sucks sure but you can do a 1/4 acre yard in an hour unless it's more torpedo grass than anything.

If you can pull all roots out by hand, it's not torpedo grass.

Torpedo grass roots can go deeper than 12", up to 2-3'. Impossible to control by pulling. Cannot be eliminated by any means other than round up entire lawn and start over. Can be controlled with quinclorac, but cannot be used on all lawns.

My centipede lawn is now a torpedo grass lawn...it friggin sucks! I am still trying to fight it out of my landscaping but that too is becoming a losing battle. I have definitely considered the scorched earth/Zoysia route. My lawn gets full sun so I think I would be ok. My main concern is when I start treating it for the torpedo grass that will keep coming in from both neighbor's lawns, will I end up killing the edges of their lawn? And I'm sure this is a really stupid idea, but if I am starting over, what if I put down like an 18' piece of sheeting vertically at the border of my lawn to try and keep it out?

This is one of my big issues. My neighbor is the guy who mows his lawn every 2 weeks and edges maybe once a month.
I'm waiting for the HOA to crawl up his arse. That said, he doesn't give a shite about controlling it, so I can't just kill it all then go back with centipede.

There is really only one small area in the front that has caught the torpedoHIV, and it's surrounded by concrete on 4 sides, but one of those sides is his driveway. I hate torpedograss. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.

The grass on the lawn, and between the office building on I-10 of E. Eric Guirard's is Empire Zoysia. (near College Dr)

The grass on the south side of the LSU Student Union is Empire Zoysia.

LSU likes zoysia. If it's at LSU and it looks like something "different", it's probably zoysia.
Just for reference, Empire leaves more closely resemble centipede. Geo Zoysia more closely resembles Bermuda leaves.

Those are the easiest to see that I can recall from memory.

Torpedo grass will go completely under a sidewalk and come out on the other side so don't get false security with it being surrounded by concrete.

I have Pallisades Zoysia and it looks very similar to centipede. It's known as a medium textured blade as opposed to fine which I assume looks more like Bermuda. I got it due to shade tolerance, but was surprised how similar it looked to centipede. I prefer the soft short look of Bermuda, i don't find the Pallisades as dense.

Where are you located? Do you find it to be much higher maintenance than centipede?
