Could we everyday citizens defend our southern border?

Can those of you who are more versed than I answer a question for me?
What could the government do if we decided to go to Texas and defend our border? I'm not talking about a protest. I'm talking about setting up posts along the border where we "peacefully monitor" the activity.
What could the feds do to stop us?
Would we be considered a "militia"?
Just wondering in case Texas asks for our help.

Cartels would be better armed.
National Guard should be doing it since the Feds won't.
