We're planning a trip to Banff and Glacier National Park for next summer.

Does anyone have any experience with renting a car in Canada and driving into the states? My travel planning partner has the impression that that's not allowed. We would like to rent in Canada, drive into the states, but then return the car to Canada.

I have rented in the US and driven into Canada but not vice versa.

We'll check with the car rental and our insurance companies but just wondering if anyone has personal experience.

Heading up to Canada this coming week so I can ask around. Is your worry border patrol?

As long as the agency allows you to select the pickup and return locations in different countries, I don’t see the issue.

I would however prepare for a long stop at border control. Rental cars are likely a guaranteed search for them

No, I don't think so. The other couple we're traveling with was researching rental cars and she got the idea that Canadian rental car companies won't allow you to take the car into the US.

We're thinking of flying to Calgary, driving to see the two parks, and return to Calgary to fly home. We don't want to have to swap cars between countries. She said we would have to take a shuttle to the border, after being at Banff, and rent a car to drive in the US.;

Thanks

Thanks, maybe that's the issue rather than the companies just don't allow it. Maybe it's more of a recommendation to get a different car at the border - which is apparently an option.

That makes sense to me.

I recently rented a car in Seattle, drove to Vancouver BC and returned the car in Vancouver without any issues. I don't know why the reserve wouldn't be true too.

Thanks, if I understand correctly, you went to Banff & Glacier last June and you plan to go back this July and August.

Did you drive or fly last year? This year?

If you flew, I presume you rented a car. Any issues with that? Doesn't sound like you had any issues crossing the border but were you going into Canada from the US, or US to Canada, or both.

Where did you fly into and out of (if you flew)?

How difficult is the online vehicle reservation process for the Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, North Fork, and Two Medicine? Vehicle reservations don't open for those places for July until March 1, for August it's April 1. I think the vehicle reservation system was in place last year - it may have only been in effect for GTTSR though.

This. Google a local rental car office in Canada and call that office specifically. I have a lot more luck talking to the local rental agents then the people in corporate.

For example, Belleville, IL airport has an odd Enterprise location and corporate doesn't know it. So you gotta call them directly for any help.

Calling is good advice. We'll do that.

I rented a car in Toronto with some sketch discount agency to that tried to force $40/d insurance on me because I was an American. I didn't buy it my insurance covers rentals in US and Canada. I did notice that in the paperwork I was NOT to leave the province, which of course I ignored and drove to Quebec. I thought that a very strange provision.

Honestly, not that strange…. for the 1990s.

I worked for a rental car company in the mid 90s and we were required to ask the renter if they were planning to leave the state. If so, we then noted what states to which they would be traveling and write them on the contract. Technically, if they drove the rental to a non-listed state, they were guilty of grand theft auto. Realistically, the company would cancel their CDW if they took it out, leaving them liable for the car if there was an issue.
