Very. I thought he was a huge a-hole that had obviously mellowed the last 5-6 years or so. But I always thought of him as a top 5-7 CFB coach.

The money we paid it should.

extremely easy schedule and got beat pretty badly anytime they got into the playoffs

That’s a myth about the schedule. Their schedule is always top 20. They play a schedule of at least 10 power 5 teams and part of the reason it is not more is a commitment to uphold the promise to always play academy schools. They do always get blown out in playoffs, though. That is where the disparity of talent levels are the most glaring. Kelly is a top five coach IMO, but now he will have to prove it. He’s finally on equal footing with others.

Top 10 coach who wins, coaches QB's and we saw it first hand as he out coached LSU twice in bowl games.

I didn't think he was "elite" but def top 10 and a winner.

I thought he was top 5, but not capable of reaching the top. I never thought about what he could do at another school, I thought he would retire at ND.

This is pretty much spot on for me.

coaches QB's

This is simply not true. My dad went to ND, and I've followed ND for 35+ years. His development and management of QBs was far and away the most disappointing part of his tenure at ND. He did many other things very well at ND, but not the QB position.

I had him right around a top 5 coach.

Saban
Dabo
Smart
Kelly
Riley
Day

Those would be my top 6 based on their current accomplishments. Dabo may fall now because he finally is losing his coordinators, but he won multiple NCs, so I have to give him credit for that. Day inherited a great program, so we'll know more about him next year and after, but he has still done well so far.

Kelly put Cincinnati on the map by winning big there and then he took ND to the playoffs multiple times and made it to the national championship. ND pretty much sucked for two decades before he got there. I think they only had 5 winning seasons in the decade before he got there. Now they have won 10+ games in 6 of their last 7 seasons. He consistently won a lot of games even with the academic hurdles in recruiting, etc.

I always felt he was top 5 reputation wise. I honestly never studied his coaching. I was always impressed with his rankings.

Yep, I know. I was stating my view of him before we hired him. I know he doesn't coach that group now.

Still think he is heavily involved in play calling and running the offense. Do you agree with that?

Hard to argue with the success he had at Cincy and he brought ND back up to relevance after Weiss.

+1. I just knew that ND sucked before he got there and was much better after.

Really didn’t think he was an option, so more surprised than anything else.

said, he is a massive upgrade from Orgeron.

To do that he’ll need to win more games each year crescendoing to a national championship in ‘24.

I think that's right. His DCs are allowed complete autonomy over the defense, and Kelly wants to be much more involved with the offense. Tommy Rees indicated that having more autonomy over the offense was a major reason he stayed at ND rather than follow Kelly to LSU, which I think is a reasonable desire for a young up and coming coordinator. Kelly will always have the final say on the offense, and as HC, he should have the final say if he wants it.

I knew he was good at coaching football. His resume speaks for itself. He was never on my radar bc I knew the rich tradition of ND, and did not think for a moment he would leave. Needless to say, the hire caught me by surprise.

With that being said, I always put him in my top 10 know he could do better at a less restrictive school.

Never really paid him any attention because he was at Notre Dame.Once I heard LSU was hiring him I said to myself “Obviously Scott knows what he is doing”.So I researched Kelly and once I researched him it was kinda like the Jay Johnson hire.Never really studied them but once I researched them it was obvious why they were hired.Proven success, proven player development, and Kelly is opposite of Coach O.So after studying his resume I would say it be foolish to not put him in the top 5 thus far of active coaches.Hopefully the success continues
