Seems like it must’ve been a down year in cfb and the pollsters threw up their hands and decided to give it to the undefeated non-power conference school for a change.

BYU was ranked 1 going into the bowls. They were behind Washington until they lost to SC. BYU was getting smashed in the media by coaches also. But both the coaches and media poll voted BYU 1

Bosco hurt his knee bad came back in the game and led the comeback.

If OU wins the Orange it’s probably a split championship

BYU played 1 ranked (at the time) team that ended up being 3-7-1. They played 4 teams that would end up with a winning record. They dominated one of those teams, Tulsa who finished 6-5. Beat Hawaii (7-4) 18-13, Air Force (8-4) 30-25, and Utah (6-5-1) 24-14.

There was, in part, a narrative at the time about needing someone from one of the "other" divisions (G5 now) to have shot at a #1 finish.

ETA: combined W-L_T of opponents - 61-85-3
