While that is true, in terms of wins and winning percentage since the year 2000, they are either #2 or #3 in the SEC behind Alabama and (maybe) LSU. They have been in the discussion multiple times for the national championship whereas the closest Cincinnati has gotten was 2009 where they finished undefeated in the regular season before getting blown out in the Sugar Bowl by Florida in Tim Tebow's last collegiate appearance.

Sure in SEC fans minds that’s the case.

Nationally the view would be they are yet another school from the south who has been dominating the recruiting rankings and gets every rankings break for the last 5 years despite getting dominated in at least one game yearly.

They shouldn’t even be in the playoffs much less national champions

Cincinnati obviously is the G5 and pollsters went out of their way to underrate Michigan all year. It literally took the last regular season game of the year for them to get serious talk
