Click on the link. He's a five star.

That must be his high school ranking, because Alabama is listed with two portal commits, both 4 stars.

Check Bama's commitment list. Ricks is a 5-star

I saw the same thing you did, but those numbers aren't accurate.

He’s a five-star. You have to scroll down a ways to find him on Alabama’s list

Ricks want stay healthy long enough to be an impact, especially when LSU plays them on the backend of the schedule.

I'd like to see LSU's average rating if you took out the punter and long snapper, be a better measure.

Taking the punter and long snapper out would give LSU a 89.4 avg. Which would be top 5.

Wingo and Shorts would boost LSU to 91 atleast. Wingo himself would boost LSU to 91.5 player avg.

Ricks "health issue" wasn't the reason he stopped playing, he just used that as an excuse to stop playing realizing he wanted to transfer. He had the same issue in 2020 and early 2021 and played through it no problem. His play certainly wasn't affected much by whatever it was. He quit, got some surgery on the issue bothering him and will be 100% go for Bama's spring practice. His health doesnt hold him back at all. There's no real issue there other than some nagging thing he was able to play through for 1.5 years.

OT Miles Frazier - 0.9200 4-star

Future NFL LT and our prize in the portal.

People are going to know this kid's name soon. Only reason he's a 4-star in the portal is due to him coming from FIU, which I understand not arguing. Just saying he's a fricking beast.

IF we get both Jacoby Mathews and Harold Perkins, that puts us with the #4 class overall with 314.13 points. Not that it matters points wise, but it's more to prove that theyre doing work getting guys we need.

Just landing Jacoby Mathews gets us to 284.52 overall which is excellent considering everything that has been going on.

Joe Foucha, Arkansas' 3 year starter and team captain at safety only got a 89 3-star transfer rating

Greg Brooks, also an Arkansas 3 year starter at NB but probably not as good as Foucha (any Ark fan would agree there), got a 90 4-star transfer rating

Landon Jackson, who didnt play defense at all his first year here despite us playing 10 different players at his position, got a 90 4-star transfer rating

Mcglothern who started some games this year for us, got a 91 4-star transfer rating. Which I tend to agree with that, but no idea why Foucha especially is so low by comparison.

Edit - Koy Moore got a 83 3-star rating, what?

I suspect it has a lot to do with upside.

Foucha is a senior with 1 year of eligibility left due to the COVID year. Brooks is a junior with 2 years of eligibility left. So might be the better player, but he’s also the more experienced player so that’s to be expected.

Landon Jackson is a true freshman at a position that generally requires physical development. So you would expect him to be a much better player at the end of his college career than he is right now.

McGlothern’s rating is just barely higher than his high school rating. Which I think makes sense, as you said. He also has less experience than both Foucha and Brooks - he’s a sophomore with 3 years remaining. So potentially more upside (don’t know how/if 247 incorporates any of the off-the-field stuff).

Koy Moore is a sophomore with 3 years left but he’s fallen down the depth chart from year 1 to year 2. I would think that’s a bit of a red flag for the 247 guys. He was our 5th leading receiver (in receptions) in 2020, but only had 5 catches in 3 games this year. He didn’t log a single catch in the four SEC games this year before he entered the portal. I don’t remember whether he was dealing with injuries, but I can see how 247 might knock him for getting passed up by a bunch of true freshmen.

Not saying I necessarily agree with all of these ratings, just that I suspect this is part of the thought process. If they are being consistent in their approach to ratings, they are projecting each player at the end of their college career.. not necessarily rating them based on their ability right now. Generally speaking more experience = less potential upside long term.

Exactly. The way I think 247 does it, for an upperclassmen transfer to be a 5 star, they should have a first round grade on them right now (like ricks). 4 star upperclassmen probably 2-4 round and a 3 star would be a late round pick.

For underclassmen, there is still a lot based on potential and athletic ability, because they still have more years to develop

yes, I don't have a lot of confidence in their star rating system either. Foucha is rated to low and Jackson is rated way to high. But Koy Moore, he isn't a superstar but he dam sure isn't a 83. The rating system they have is way out of wack

Are the star rankings on this list based on the players’ rankings when they were coming out of high school? Or do they assign them stars based upon their performance in college?

247 has recently started adjusting ratings for transfers. So if a guy underperforms his high school rating, he drops. If he outperforms that rating, he gets a bump.

247 grades themselves against the NFL draft. Their justification is that NFL scouts are pretty good judges of talent, and that a high draft hit rate usually correlates to success for college teams. This effectively means they are projecting players’ performance at the end of their college careers, not right now. Which is why, for two transfer players with the same ability, the younger player will likely get a higher rating.
