They wouldn’t be operating over enemy lines just like the Russians do t really cross that line either. Both sides have strong AA defense. They need f-16s though to patrol their airspace as well as act as a deterrent to Russian attack aircraft and give the Ukes some semblance of an air presence. Their Mig-29s are just completely obsolete and can’t do the job anymore. Credit to their pilots for flying what they have but the f-16 is a far better aircraft than anything they currently have. The radar and fire control systems are night and day to the MiG-29. As far as range, you are right that the f-16 doesn’t have great range but the conforming fuel tanks that look like an extension of the airframe provide a good bit more range while not hurting the aircraft’s performance or increasing it’s radar signature like regular drop tanks would. They are now well on their way to being a western fighting force so they need western fighters that can talk to western weapons packages whereas they had to basically rig up a way for their old soviet Migs to talk to western munitions like the HARM, JDAM or air to air missiles.

Range generally refers to the distance a plane can fly on a tank of gas. And the F-16 can’t go very far with any extra weight like bombs on it. The Ukrainians to my knowledge don’t have any aerial refueling capabilities. It’s an absolutely terrible CAS platform. The design is just as old as most of the Soviet era fighters already in theater. It’s more difficult to maintain. It can’t handle rough runways.
Just not sure what all the hubbub is about. I really don’t see it making a huge impact. Money would be better spent on ATACMS/HIMARS, air defense systems and arty rounds.
