They most certainly were reckless. I suspect Putin thought he would get the concessions he wanted. When that didn’t happen they had to go through with it.

Ok. So the gotcha is all in your head.

On Monday as you are getting off the short bus, stop and ask the driver to read all of this back to you. Maybe there will be a moment of clarity.

Remember to reach out to Theo. He can help

It just said we support Ukraine’s right to choose their own way.

This is correct and worded so everyone can read it how they want. Reminds me of the One China Principle, the 1992 Consensus can be interpreted in different ways and each side sees it the way they want to which helps them sleep at night.

I agree with a lot of what you said. But:

quote:

They have historically been the most corrupt European nation for years.
Second most corrupt after Russia is fair. It's a function of coming out of the Soviet Union later than most. They are actively purging the corruption but it takes time. Russia supporters who point at Ukraine corruption are comical.

quote:

What concerns me is, Russia with a despot leader, a depleted military, a collapsing demographic, is still a nuclear power. I know some of you guys poo poo the idea the that he would ever use them, but I don’t trust them to think like we do.

I don't disagree, but the problem is that if we give in to Russian nuclear blackmail there will be a a lot more nuclear blackmail in the future, and a huge incentive to develop nukes. Honestly, for anyone who understands statistics the nuclear game the human race is playing has only one end.

Roughly 75% of Russians live in the 25% of Russia that is west of the Ural Mountains. Aka. European Russia.

25% of Russians live in the remaining 75% of Russian territory east of the Ural Mountains. Aka Asian Russia.

The vast majority of Russia is Asian. The vast majority of Russians are European.

There’s a difference in giving in to nuclear blackmail with a country like say, Iran or North Korea, who have extremely limited number of bombs and probably even less delivery systems and giving in to the largest nuclear power by number of bombs in the world with the means to deliver them. Also what are the stakes? Is Ukraine worth the end of civilization as we know it? Is Iran potentially threatening the world’s oil supply worth it? Is Taiwan worth it?

Maybe they all are worth it and maybe none of them are. But it’s not as simple as stomping our feet and screaming we won’t be bullied by the likes of Putin.

"what is still called Ukraine" -- Yet again, Russia denies Ukraine's right to exist.

Oh, and how's the demilitarization going?

I would posit that there is no difference at all. When you demonstrate that you will give in to nuclear blackmail to a major power, all the minor powers will take notice and follow suit.

North Korea was Russia's proxy to invade S. Korea.

There is a very good documentary on the Korean War on YouTube called "The Korean War In Color." Many of the "in Color" docus stink, but that one goes into very good background details. Stalin "helped" in North Korea after Japan had surrendered. Truman rendered South Korea weak and ripe for the NORK attack.

Thinking about the cluster munitions, I think that there will be two main impacts:

1) Obviously, they will be more effective than standard rounds at helping Ukraine clear trenches, which is a significant part of the challenge that Ukraine faces right now.

The rounds promised today should be hitting Russian troops in a little over two weeks. I expect that Ukraine will be able to make faster progress once they get these shells.

2) They extend the Ukrainian offensive. So far, Ukraine has committed only a small part of its new western-armed brigades to the fight. Ukraine has lost some vehicles, but they've been replaced faster than they've been lost. In fact, Ukraine hasn't lost any Strykers at all yet, so the 32 pledged today will likely go with some Leopard 1 tanks to equip another mechanized brigade.

No, Ukraine has been taking ground slowly specifically so as not to lose men and equipment. The problem with the slow pace of the Ukrainian offensive was that Ukraine was going to run out of ammo, and the offensive would culminate.

Ukraine can now feel confident that won't happen anytime soon. Some 400,000 or so cluster rounds, when added to Ukrainian stocks, will extend the offensive by several months. Ukraine can be confident that they will continue to have the necessary ammo to attack until the mud season arrives in late fall.

By then, Abrams and GLSDB will have entered the fight. Ukraine will continue to get stronger over the next few months, while Russia continues to replace destroyed modern tanks with ancient T-55s.
