Source: Ukrainian drones strike Russian energy facilities overnight

by Kateryna Denisova and The Kyiv Independent April 20, 2024 12:49 PM

Ukrainian special services, together with the military, orchestrated a large-scale drone attack on Russia's energy infrastructure overnight on April 20, an intelligence source told the Kyiv Independent.

According to the country's defense ministry, Russian air defense shot down 50 Ukrainian drones over eight regions, including Belgorod, Kursk, Moscow, Tula, Ryazan, Bryansk, Kaluga, and Smolensk oblasts.

A fire broke out at three separate energy facilities in the latter three regions, according to local authorities. Drone debris also reportedly started a fire at a fuel storage tank in Smolensk Oblast.

The attack was a joint operation of Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Military intelligence agency (HUR) and the Special Operations Forces (SOF), the source said.

The drones reportedly targeted the energy infrastructure that powers the Russian military-industrial complex, causing problems with electricity and water supply in some areas.

"The SBU drones successfully attacked the infrastructure that ensures the continuous operation of military facilities in Russia," a military intelligence source told the Kyiv Independent.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims of Russian authorities, and Ukraine does not usually comment on alleged attacks on Russian soil.

The Kyiv Independent

In summary, Russian air defense units reportedly intercepted and destroyed 50 drones overnight, distributed as follows:

26 over the Belgorod region
10 over the Bryansk region
8 over the Kursk region
2 over the Tula region
1 each over the Smolensk, Ryazan, Kaluga, and Moscow regions.

Around 50 unidentified drones attacked various facilities across Russia overnight. In Smolensk Oblast, an explosion at a facility was recorded, particularly at the Kardymovo oil depot, which belongs to the LUKOIL-Tsentrnefteprodukt syndicate, leading to a powerful fire in two locations.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
20 April 2024

On 19 April 2024, Russia carried out airstrikes using Tu-22M3
BACKFIRE C strategic bombers likely against targets in southern
Ukraine. Defence Intelligence of Ukraine announced that they had shot
down one of the bombers, with reports circulating online that appeared
to show a single BACKFIRE losing control in the air, and subsequently
crashing into a field.

The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed that a BACKFIRE had
crashed and that a Search and Rescue Mission was ongoing but did not
admit to the shoot-down. However, it is almost certain that reports of a
S-200 missile (SA-5) being used are accurate and that this was another
successful Ukrainian action against the Russian Air Force. This system is
likely the same system used to shoot down a Russian A-50 MAINSTAY
on 23 February 2024.

This is the first instance of a strategic bomber being shot down by
Ukrainian Air Defence systems. It is highly likely that Russia has now
sustained at least 100 fixed-wing combat aircraft losses to date.

Ukraine weapons package ‘ready to go’ once aid bill clears Congress - The Washington Post

It will take the Pentagon less than a week to deliver some weapons to Ukrainian units who have been forced to ration artillery and air defense rounds, officials say

The Defense Department, which has warned that Ukraine would steadily cede more ground to Russian forces and face staggering casualties without urgent action on Capitol Hill, began assembling the assistance package well before the coming votes in a bid to speed the process, these people said.

Ukraine aid just passed. Headed to the Senate. The Pentagon already instructed the military to get the aid package together to save time. Great news for Ukraine.

It’s been beyond time to either give Ukraine what it needs or force then to the negotiating table in a position of weakness. The status quo can’t continue.

Senate has to go through committee and stuff. Remember that the four bills are attached by rule, so all four get voted on then.

Probably passes the Senate around Wednesday and heads to Biden's desk.

I support the bill, but they should probably try to negotiate after firing the first round from the bill.

Johnson got a significantly different and sensible deal through in the form of individual bills as compared to the mammoth abomination the senate passed, tying ukraine and Israel aid to a border package that was going to normalize illegal crossings at record levels. I'm impressed.

The supplemental passed by the senate in Feb did not mention the border.

Johnson's sounded very statesmanlike the other day. I wish they had passed this months ago but apparently something or someone finally convinced him Russia is a threat to world peace and stability.
