Charcoal imparts a better "grill flavor" IMO. I am a fan of the Weber Performer charcoal grill due to its convenience, cooking area, multitude of accessories, build quality, and versatility (grill or smoker). There are a lot of quality choices available, though, including the PK New Original and others.
EDIT: Like bluebarracuda said, ceramic cookers/kamados (and variants) like the Big Green Egg have huge followings. While they are not my cup of tea, many folks cook terrific food on them.
