I love the Trevor Penning pick and think he has as high of a ceiling as any tackle in the draft and he loves football and has a great work ethic. However, I am not going to sugar coat the fact that his technique is not good. I would be shocked if he was ready to start week one.

The reason why he holds so much is that he has some really terrible habits. These are some big issues in his technique that I see.
- Doesn’t punch with inside hands. Allows defender to get into his chest and wrestles with him with hands on the outside.
- in pass pro will stop his feet, open his hips (lane to the qb), and try to dump them
- Not patient enough in pass protection and doesn’t trust his kick slide. His kick slide also needs work.

All of these things are coachable. He needs to be more patient in pass protection which will come with improving his technique and confidence on kick slide. He actually has quick feet but his technique is poor or he doesn’t trust it. Needs keep shoulders square to LOS longer and let defender come to him then attack with a strong inside punch. Defender gets your chest it is over. The second you open your hips you give the defender a lane to the qb around the edge or put yourself in a bad position for an inside counter like a spin. Needs to stop opening up and wrestling. Needs to work on keeping his feet moving and mirroring defender.

If he can improve those techniques I’m pretty confident that he will be one of the best tackles in the league. He has everything you want in an offensive tackle big, athletic, good bend, quick feet, nasty, work ethic. His technique is bad but at the same time also doesn’t look as raw as other raw players I have seen in the past. He also doesn’t look as goofy and awkward as those. The talent is there for sure. Will just depend how long it takes to break these bad habits.

That’s what we pay Doug Maronne for. If the coaches don’t think he’s ready Day 1 and we need to ease him into the lineup later on then so be it.

It’s not like this team isn’t used to it since Armstead would routinely miss weeks at a time.

How much homework did you do on the tackles for this draft?

Hell of a breakdown. I was big on him for awhile and like you saw a lot of his “issues” appear to be coachable. Obviously, you need to have someone willing to learn and put the time in to make it work; but everything about this guy says he fits that desc.

One thing I look at is if he didn’t have these tendencies, there is a really good chances he’s a top 5 pick. Hopefully he’s a quick learner and has minimal setbacks along the way

What makes people think that they have the knowledge and experience to critique professional football prospects? This sounds like you are just parroting some talking head's time filler speak. We don't know anything about these players that isn't filtered down for us. Not one of us has watched all his games at Northern Iowa.

The only real question about him for this year is whether he starts more fights with opposing players (or even teammates in practice) than Ceedy Duce.

What I do like is he is going to be molded into a consistent pro bowl level OT. He is not ready today but we have solid options in place until he is ready which will be this season and my guess is sooner rather than later.

I just got a text from my brother who works at a clothing store.. One of the Saints execs came in and said they are extremely happy with the Penning pick... I figured the Saints would have drafted an OT with the first pick and a WR with the second first round pick.. But it all worked out..

Mobile, agile, and hostile. Improve on technique, and he is going to be really good.

He’s definitely a bit of a project - it makes you wonder how we are going to deploy him to get the necessary reps he needs.

I’m not going to pretend like I know much about tackle skills. My only concern is that with his size, will he be quick enough to protect? He’ll be facing the quickest big guys on the other team.

They said the same thing about Peat when he came out.
Look at him now.
