I’ve never worn the seatbelt in my forklift, but one common thing that can happen is having a heavy load or incline tip the forklift forward, then lose the load and catapult backwards. If you tipped it over in the parking lot maybe it would keep you inside the cage until it hit its side but who knows.

I worked for a truck line years ago, and our forklifts had seatbelts we were told we had to wear them. I think they got cited by an OSHA inspector because for the longest time, we never used them.
