What happens if you try?

You don't try. You succeed.

It's taken away, along with any other portable electronics lying around.

And if they refuse, I'm taking them to Sonic.

This has to be one of the softest parenting questions I've seen in some time.

I don't understand this thread at all. Sometimes I take it just for fun and to remind them it isn't really theirs. Sometimes I randomly lock them out of it using the family whatever app because they need to get their arse outside. If I call you and you don't answer it gets locked in the safe for a few days. Also there will be no social media. We have access to the device and any accounts they create. They know why and generally get it, to the extent they can as teenagers.

I did anytime the didn’t do what they were supposed to.

Also took their car/trucks away and put them back on bus when they were caught speeding as well. They went to school 30 miles from home and if they had practice they would have to sit outside school til I got there at 5:30.

Here is where you are failing.

I have no problem taking my phone that I allow him to use away from him

My kid is 12 and has a phone so that he can call us when he needs picked up from band or scouting events. It's a cheap iPhone SE and it's locked down so he can only use a few apps and a couple games. It won't do anything after 10 except make emergency calls

How do you set it up like this?

Don’t give them smartphones to begin with. They can’t handle it. TikTok and social media are cancer to their young minds

This is truth. We took our kids phones away about 6 months ago, there’s way less drama and they started socializing much more. I regret ever giving them one in the first place.

If your kid has a smart phone you're probably a lazy parent.

My 7yo plays with 8/9/10 yo's in the neighborhood, some of them have smartphones. I got Midland X-Talkers and send him out with a radio check on channel 3 so he can call me and I can call him if needed. I have tried to trick him in the past by pretending to be someone else calling on the channel and he won't respond and it freaks him out, and we also have a code for changing channels. I say go up two, it means go down 1.

Screentime on the iphone. If he wants to use an app I haven't approved or before or after the time I've set, it asks my phone for permission. It's part of the Family settings.

Seems a bit much but I like it. We need more people like you and less people with cell phones altogether. Not only are they used for all types of filthy reasons, they turn our society into zombies. The amount time that people spend staring in their device startling. Everywhere, people are in/on their phones. I'm guilty of it too.

Social Media Apps steal your soul.

nothing wrong there.... just set him up to facetime on your phone or use an old phone. remember when people had a home phone....everybody used the same phone number. get him a cheap flip phone with those cards if he has to have a phone for "emergencies". he'll hate you but would you give him crystal meth
