Driving West Coast Highway 101/1

We started driving Highway 101/1 on the West Coast ten years ago where it starts/ends in Washington State. We have taken 2 trips out there to complete it and have made it South to San Fransisco.
This week we plan on completing the trip, starting in San Diego and making our way North to San Fran, ending with a stay in Napa for a few days.
We fly into San Diego around noon on Thursday and are meeting people in Santa Rosa, CA on Saturday, so we will have 3 days to spend on the road.
We already booked rooms in Dana Point, CA and Morro Bay, Ca. This puts us driving 4-6 hours each day, leaving plenty of room to explore.
Any tips or ideas on places to eat or check out while we are traveling?

Grew up on the central coast.
It’s Morro Bay. Dutchman’s Seafood House is a great place to eat there.
State street in Santa Barbara, but eat at Cold Spring Tavern which is a historic stagecoach stop. Also a getaway for old Hollywood.
Solvang is a cool Scandinavian village.
Check out Montana De Oro in Los Osos - beautiful walk along the cliffs.
Cambria is a cute town to walk around.
Take a tour of Hearst castle.
Big Sur is beautiful
Monterrey Bay Aquarium
Make sure to stop at the Russian River Brewery in Windsor and get some Pliny!

LINK
Check that link out.... I had some good posts in there about things to do between LA to Monterrey
I can't help with anything south of Malibu.... but I would rec staying in Malibu/Santa Barbara possibly pending on what yall are trying to do/see/eat.
We skipped Morrow Bay as the more I looked into it and compared it to other sites etc we would be able to see I didn't think it was worth it as much as Paso Robles was.
I would rec Paso as well then from Paso you can shoot straight across to Cambria to make your ride up along the coast.
Between Santa Barbara and Paso they have a town called Solvang. DEFINITELY stop here...we had it planned pretty perfect to where we were able to visit for breakfast and enjoy all of the danish style pastries etc. Neat town
Paso isn't much further from there and can check out some vineyards.
Enjoy the trip

If you’re staying in Morris Bay, you could spend some time in San Luis Obispo. My son graduated Cal Poly in 2019, so we got to spend some time there over four years. They’re proud of continually being named one of the happiest places in America, but it really does have a different vibe there than much of California. It never felt as wacky there, you know? Still progressive, but a very slow pace, chill, relaxed.
- On Thursday nights, Higuera St turns into a giant farmer’s market with local crafts. Pretty amazing. Downtown itself is pretty cool. Interesting shops, good food.
- Outside of Napa and Sonoma, the county has the next largest amount of wineries in the state, usually uncrowded.
- It’s a college town, so there’s some really good breweries there.
- If you’re into hiking, there are tons of trails around. Beautiful scenery.
- Someone already mentioned the Hearst Castle nearby.
- It seems like every restaurant has outdoor seating. They love being outside there. And fantastic happy hour selections. Plus, most places take pride in sourcing their stuff locally. I miss: Petra (Mediterranean), Luna Red (Mexican), Giuseppe’s (Italian). And my fave, Eureka!. Great whiskey bar, with most of the local craft beers on tap. Huge burgers, wings, salads. Best bison burger I’ve ever had. Get. The. Fries.

Neptune's Net in Malibu is very touristy but a cool and popular place. It's been featured in a few movies (the original Point Break and one of the Iron Man movies off the top of my head). I learned to surf across the road at Leo Carillo Beach years ago so it holds some sentimental value. Great views there overlooking the water.
Nepenthe in Big Sur has some great views.
I'm pretty sure another mudslide has created a significant detour in the Big Sur area so you may want to check ahead of time.

Just returned last week from driving the coast between Cambria and Monterrey. Hearst castle is back in full swing giving tours now that the roads have been repaired. We ate at The Bench in Pebble beach overlooking the 18th green. Spectacular view.

Pismo beach is only about 25-30 min away from Morro Bay, cool little surf town. The Oyster Loft is a pretty damn good restaurant for dinner. On the water by the main pier

I know it's a chain restaurant, but if you can fit it into your schedule, stop for lunch or dinner at The Chart House in Cardiff Beach in North County San Diego. Pretty good food and great views of the Pacific, especially at sunset.
I lived in San Diego for a year and went there several times. If I was independently wealthy, I would live in North County San Diego close to the Pacific.

If you have any interest in the classic Peanuts comics, don’t miss the the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa.
