Three of my mother's (no pics) brothers were Marines. One served during the Korean War, and the other two served in Vietnam.
My father's uncle was at Iwo Jima. He told me he had spent a grand total of six hours in combat before a Jap grenade shredded his leg up pretty good. He considered it a potentially life-saving break; he got to spend the remainder of the war hitting up nurses in Guam and Hawaii.
