The position "President of Russia" did not even exist until the USSR was already in its death throes.

Yes, as I said, Yeltsin rose within the Soviet system, but he repudiated that system almost immediately after becoming President of the Russian Federation and made a VERY public resignation from the Communist Party. His most-consequential actions on the world stage occurred after that resignation.
