Can't speak specifically to the drumline, but my son played trumpet in Tiger Band, so I can speak to what he went through.
Tryouts were a bitch. Camp is a lot of hours. March, march, and march some more. Long days. He was not first chair in HS and made the cut. Tutoring to improve sight reading (sight reading is a must), even worked with his HS band instructor on things. Auditions can be stressful.
Auditions and tryouts every year. Turnover every year. He got cut his SR year, along with several other seniors. Constant practice, and if you can't improve or have a bad audition you're gone.
That being said, he enjoyed his time immensely. Honestly, his being cut was probably for the best because he took 21 hours that semester to graduate with 2 degrees (subtle brag).

Band at the high school level gets a lot of shite but those kids put in work.

More work than any of the athletic teams.

I can imagine college band is pretty similar.

That sounds like some bullshite. I'd be pissed as a parent. What a shitty thing to do to a kid who's dedicated his life to the GBFTL.
