I’ve seen that they can’t start backgrounds checks until person has accepted because dont want to waste money. Could also be person who has to sign paper for hr to send formal offer is gone on vacation or conference.

Damn, are you trying to get on “the list” before you even get an offer from an employer.

No lie, I'm a little antsy because I'm ready to get the hell out of my current gig. Thought I'd retire at my current but the burnout is bad, plus the new job offered a hell of a lot more.

Which department?
I’ve seen anywhere from 1 month to an unbelievable 6 months.
(Yes I know the person who waited that long. the hiring manager’s unproductive delays was the problem
Yes there are numerous hiring manager to HR delays and approvals.
Salary compensation review & audit, background checks, drug test, anal probes, pretty ridiculous.

Total waste of time & money.
Good Luck,
It’s probably the hiring manager delaying the process.
you know, the one you’re gonna work under.

Nothing happens fast at the state. NOTHING. You raises may be delayed by months (it's why I quit). The paperwork just to get anything, including expense reimbursement, is awful.

For now, wait it out. It will probably go through. But once you start there, you're on Island Time.

The verbal offer is conditional. Once you pass the background and urinalysis and the senior person signs off on your packet and the pay being offered then you will get a finalized offer with a start date.

Pretty normal. When I worked for the state I interviewed, two rounds, then total silence for 4 months. Got an email about calling them to finalize salary and shite for an offer. A month later got the call it was all approved and waited three weeks for the offer letter. Did a little over a decade but finally couldn’t take working at the speed of govt and constantly being in reactive mode vs proactive mode. I do miss the holidays and vacation/sick time accruals though.

Remember the Seinfeld scene where Newman gets hurt and Jerry volunteers to do Newman's job so that Newman could transfer to another area? Jerry was too efficient and the post office knew that it wasn't normal for a mailman to be that efficient.

Jerry: "I tried my best!"
Newman: "Exactly, you're a disgrace to the uniform"

Why would you work for the state? No ambition or drive to work?

Yes, I did call the woman that offered me the verbal offer, and she said they are working on it and when I receive the written that I will be able to receive a start date to put in my 2 weeks notice. Should I call HR of the agency I applied for or just wait it out longer?

It takes forever, just wait it out.

I was verbally offered a job with the Department of Defense in February of 2018. I stayed in touch with the hiring manager for about 3 months then told him I was no longer interested as I had taken another job. About a month into the new job got a call from the DOD with a start date. Told them I was no longer interested. A couple of months later the hiring manager called and asked when I was onboarding. Again, told him I was no longer interested. This would have been around August or so of 2018. Got a call in January of 2019 from DoD HR and asked when I could start...again, not interested. They informed me if I did not start in 90 days they would be forced to offer the position to someone else. I begged them not to do that...haven't heard from them again. Job is still posted and has been since but it could be for more than one position, I do not know. I was marginally interested when verbally offered but was willing to accept knowing that it would open the door to going overseas. Far better to be a government employee overseas than a contractor.

I received a verbal with the DoD last week...again, not overly interested but with enough bonus and the right posting overseas I would be...responded to that effect by email. Have not heard a word and do not expect to for at least a month. Ain't no hurry up in the guvment...they work at their own pace if they work at all. Folks will ask why a person would work for them at all and my answer is the same as Willie Sutton's when they asked why he robbed banks...because its where the money is. Contractor or Guvment employee either way the money is great in the war business....
