I know some older former SEALS that were pissed off at him for being a glory hound. They contend that SEALS do not gloat. They do their job and disappear....you are not supposed to know what they did and one old one told me, you really should not know that WE did it.

I am pretty sure the general consensus in the teams is O'Neill didn't shoot Bin Laden, the point man did. O'Neill was just the first to monetize it.

“Joe weighed in against the raid,” Obama writes in A Promised Land, about discussion of the Navy Seals mission, which he ordered to go ahead as intended in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on the night of 1-2 May 2011.

What I've always read is that he and Matt both shot him, among others. But the entire story of "Red" being the first in the room and going for the wives without first shooting bin Laden is what people think seems unlikely.

I'm sure opinions vary on that too, but Luttrell was obviously very unwell for a long time and I think taking his stated objective at face value (telling the story of others' heroism) is worth consideration.

That really pisses the older SEALs off. The older ones I have met and know do not think the attention is a good thing. They did not mind Act of Valor because it was overall actual bullshite. But they thought O'Neill put too much spotlight on them. They did not have a problem with Luttrell though since most of the story was already out there.

Different mindset of the older SEALs

Social media and personal branding (the finances that come with it) makes it difficult not to capitalize.

those dudes are cut from different cloth but I think it's almost impossible for the younger gen to be completely uninfluenced by the insatiable appetite for attention that all of these young'n's seem to crave

Maybe in the 90s? Now they do their jobs then retire from the military to start drop-ship merch companies and training groups capitalizing on everything they did.
