VHF Radio For Inshore Fishing

There are times I go fishing in Louisiana where I don't have cell signal. I would like to get a handheld radio for emergencies and communicating with a friend's boat when they go as well. What should I be looking at? How many miles of range do I need?

1: Want it to float
2: Submersible
3: 6 watts or better
This is what we used for the job sites it cheaper than the Icoms

One of the Cobras has Bluetooth and you can put your phone away in a dry box or bag and take phone calls on the radio. Wish my vhf had that feature.

I have found most of the hand helds suck with range. Boats have to be close.

The range by miles is very misleading that’s printed on the box. Those handhelds don’t reach very far and any kind of structures or obstacles such as marshlands will reduce the range. They are cheap and handy to have as a backup tho. For any decent range you will need to get an antenna for the boat. The higher the antenna the further the range. It’s line of sight. I have one that I can raise and lower as needed.

It's not just miles of range, but also how high each of your antennas is. I have a casting platform that I mount mine on and that increases the range a decent bit but it wouldn't matter if the other boat's antenna was on the deck.
What I use is this one:

And it has saved me from getting caught in a storm several times. I don't often use it to communicate with other boats though.

Before cell phones just about every boat had an 8’ antenna with a hard mounted vhf. The radio was nonstop with people hailing then speaking in code for their favorite channel.

Honestly miss those days on the boat. It was always entertaining.
