Maybe it was individual components popping on the way down or after being down there a while.

I could fish the shite out of other people's brush piles in toledo bend with that thing. I can build a barge to mount it on, put a generator on it, and drag that to all my favorite snapper holes too!

. They have MBES and FLS as well.

Is that on the ROVs? I’ve never seen an MPSV with anything more than a navigation echo sounder. But I’m just the dynamic positioning operator so I don’t pay too much attention to what the ROV guys are doing

They do, but I doubt they have a Kongsberg EM124 on board, so probably not hitting those depths. Could be wrong.

You're not wrong, nothing hull mounted. ROVs have dual heads though so not as much swath coverage.

It may have already been mentioned, but the story about the Byford-dolphin and the rapid decompression deaths of 5 people is a good example of how that process works.

The 'vessel' tumbling around in the currents without ability to maintain stability. Bodies are tumbling around in the cold darkness beating the crap out of each other until unconscious/dead.

Sleep tight tonight.

Between this thread and the kid who died in the Bahamas this bird is obsessed with people lost at sea.

Better than the board being obsessed with everything trans, like it has been the last 3 months.

Best case scenario is the submersible imploded quickly before anyone knew they were doomed. Worst case scenario is that they are still alive to endure the circumstances of being trapped at the bottom of the Atlantic because they won’t be rescued. If the banging noise is them and rescue operators can zero in on it, all that means is *maybe* their remains will be retrieved at some point if the effort is made to do so. But even then, they may just leave them there even if the sub is found. Plenty of dead bodies are left on Everest due to the extreme conditions. John Jones was sealed up in Nutty Putty Cave. Unless the (very wealthy) families are going to try to finance a recovery search, leave them there.

If I were in charge of this thing, I would search the surface only because the submersible bobbing around like a cork on the surface is the only scenario where these people live. Once I knew the oxygen supply was certainly gone, I would call it off.

I guess the good news is now we know carbon fiber hulls don’t work in extreme deep sea conditions and that they deteriorate to unsafe conditions within a year or two of repeated abuse at extreme pressure levels.
BBC

The drive to increase fuel efficiency and improve the aerodynamic performance of new aircraft is leading designers to move away from using aluminium in airframes.

Instead today's latest planes like Boeing's 787 Dreamliner and Airbus's A350 rely on lightweight carbon fibre composites - woven mats of carbon which are embedded in plastic.

The key to a composite material like carbon fibre is that it is incredibly strong for its weight.

Hmmm?
