Are you assuming he gets his 1950s training and they get their 2000’s training? It’s is why this narrative that guys from back then would be worse now. They would be getting the same training and nutritional advantages that these guys get.

They were far and away better than their contemporaries without that. Why would they not be with that advantage?

Because recruiting wasn't nearly the same then as today. Colleges selected those who showed up to tryouts which were maybe 50-200 white guys at the university, a mere fraction of true available talent in the US.

Today, with technology advances making any kid at any high school accessible and see their tape, ESPN recruiting, 247, on3, Scout, Rivals, are big platforms, teams spending collectively hundreds of millions, elite camps highlighting talent that may have gone unnoticed has completely changed the talent on the field.

If you don't believe this or downvote, then you're sub 90 IQ and don't recognize that the talent then was from the 80 white guys who showed up to tryouts compared to today it's from the millions of high schools kids who play football. Maybe late 70s, this picked up somewhat.

Even if they had the workout/meal plans then, the selection was just from the several white guys who showed up to tryouts. College football and NFL missed out on hundreds of hall of famers due to unadvanced technology/black players not as active or sought.

OK but nobody else in the 50s had this advantage either. No one is saying that if you went back in time to 1958, scooped Billy Cannon, and came back, and threw 1958 Billy Cannon into a 2023 LSU football game that he would be as effective as he was back then. But among his peers at that time he was better than everyone.

If Billy Cannon was born in 2005 and was going into LSU this year with the conditioning and weight training HS athletes have now that they didn't have in the 50s, do you not think it's possible he'd be a great player? You don't think he could be a Christian McCaffrey kinda guy?

Again, if you had just made this thread asking who are the best players in the Saban era and beyond (since Saban was 2000) I don't think you'd be getting these kind of responses. It's the sheer disrespect you presented with your opening statement shitting on our only Heisman winner before Burrow and anyone else that came before Y2K. When that wasn't necessary for the ultimate topic at hand, which ultimately leads me (and probably others) to believe that this was the real discussion you wanted to have to begin with.

Yeah, I guess he’d say Pete Maravich couldn’t compete in today’s game. At some point in the past players used to play offense and defense. I understand the point, but some of today’s players don’t have the stamina to play the whole game. Billy Canon, Tommy Casanova, and others were the impact players of their time, I won’t take anything away from them. The rules have changed so much. I remember Warren Capone’s job on the receiving team was to, “block” the opposing teams’ kickers. It was very funny to watch the kickers sprint for the sidelines to avoid getting their brains knocked out. I know he played for Alabama, but can you imagine how good a healthy Joe Namath would be in today’s game? Or Johnny Unitas? Or Bert Jones, Archy Manning, and Terry Bradshaw?

It’s Billy Cannon, and we get get it from your 27 unnecessary posts. You don’t like white guys, think they’re inferior athletes and you were born after 1995 and refuse to do your homework. It was a completely different game back then with 9 dudes in the box constantly. And if you don’t think Billy Cannon could have played in today’s game, you are just set in your opinion and nothing will change your mind.
