I see threads and posts saying that the government should shut down for weeks, months, or even a year, and that federal workers are lazy and a drain on taxpayers. I’m conservative, so I can see the waste that’s happening. However, I’m also a federal “essential” employee as an air traffic controller with the FAA, and I think this is the narrowest and laziest thinking imaginable. I’m supposed to be fine without getting paid for these weeks and months, but I’m also expected to continue my work in helping to run the busiest airspace in the world?
Here's the hard truth you're missing: we're quickly coming to a point where the federal government isn't going to be able to pay for a LOT of things (including your salary) if it still wants to service its debt.
The only real options you have now are to pray this shutdown causes the federal government to finally reign in deficit spending enough to start paying down on the debt or to hope you can retire (or find a private sector job) before the whole system crashes under the weight of the federal government's debt.
This isn't hyperbole, it's basic math.

Government overreach and beauracratic unaccountability has destroyed the wealth of the middle class for decades, parabolically so in the past 36 months.. not only does the government need to be shut down for ppl to be more truly "free" but it needs to be 80% gutted if we want to reestablish this nation as a free innovative nation. Your job doesn't fall into the category of the 80%, although they are doing their best to shut down air travel and combustion engines in general over the next decade FYI.
Sorry your salary depends on a corrupted rot of unethical criminals that increasingly steal more and more from the public sector while simultaneously restricting our freedoms to fund their bad decisions and enable their power hungry ways.
The federal government was never intended to have this much involvement in the lives of ordinary citizens, we need decentralized, less regulated solutions to our economy.. maybe local or state operated air traffic for instance.

If we are running a massive budget deficit, why do we still have “non-essential” federal employees?

All non essential workers are getting a free vacation. When the governemnt is refunded, all furloughs are given backpay like always
Almost all federal workers have to report to work, and won’t be paid until the back pay is approved. Park staff, some NOAA staff, some congressional staff get furloughs and don’t get paid. USPS, Federal Courts and prisons, FBI, IRS, etc. all have to keep working. This “paid vacation” thing spouted on here is crap.

Tell me why I should be okay with the government shutting down.
I’m just shocked at the blanket prejudice that’s thrown towards federal employees here. We aren’t all parasites.
Some people want to see the world burn. Others set it ablaze by accident. The poli board is both of those.

Never mind, I see you are already familiar with the PB.

We are spending 7 trillion . We take in 5 trillion . We either fix it or you won’t have to worry about air traffic control

I'm not so sure this is true for all non-essentials, but it doesn't matter, that's not the main point.
The point is that we arent saving money, these people will get paid.

If you are a productive meme er of society, the gov takes more than it provides.
How many times do you have to be told the rich don’t really pay taxes. It’s you bro. You’re paying for everything.
If it shuts down and they actually have to pass a budget, it can only be good for you.

So you’re looking at it how it affects you personally then.
Well, me and the roughly 14000 other controllers, but yeah… Make it about me.

Don't you get paid in arrears once it starts back up, whether you were working or not?
We get back pay guaranteed, but once again, should I be okay with that if it stretches months like some people in here want?

You know you will get the back pay.
So you’re cool if your son doesn’t get paid for months, then gets backpay that’s taxed to hell months later? If you are, then you’re a fricking a-hole.

You know that you get paid for all of your work when it's over. So, that might make you a liar. If you live paycheck to paycheck and the later pay won't help you then you're stupid.
Would you be okay going to work for months with no pay? You’re lying if you say yes.

I’ve thought about it. This is the third shutdown in my career.

Because shut down means that they can’t spend money anymore, money that they don’t have and they can’t burrow form China.
Or more Trillions to Ukraine.
