How often did your family go "out to eat" at a restaurant when you were a kid?

And how often do you now? It seems like cooking at home has flipped to be the special occasion now and ordering/eating out is the norm.

Rarely. Our discretionary income was spent on boats, equipment, camps and hunting leases. We played every weekend.

If we did it was to a seafood boil / dance hall / beer joint place down the bayou.

Big John’s where David Chauvin is located now on Bayou Dulac. It burned down in the 70’s.

Or TB’s in Raceland.

Very, very rarely. Certainly not to "real restaurants".

We would go to Picadilly on Sundays often, and places like that. And maybe Mcdonalds here and there, maybe mall food court if we were shopping.

But "real" sit down restaurants? It was not common at all.

My grandparents loved Bruning's so we would go there on occasion. That was about it

At least once or twice a week but I was an only child, so it wasn't as expensive as bigger families. They cooked a lot at home also.

Maybe once a year. Vacation or when one of my dads friends came through town. We had access to fresh stuff from my grandmas farm, much better.

All the money ever spent on food has literally been flushed down a toilet.

I don't eat out anymore to answer OP.

Rarely. Never.

There were times we were out of town, maybe a sports tournament, or vacation. But other than that, my parents cooked every night, and we ate together.

Very very rare. It was either Pizza Hut or the local catfish/seafood place.

Maybe twice a month. Nobody went out to eat often. One of those was Pizza Hut and about half the time the other was Bonanza. My mom and I also had lunch out (usually at Picadilly or sometimes McDonalds) for that one trip to Shreveport a month when she bought a ton of grocercies and we went to the mall.

Perhaps we went once a week, or every two weeks to a couple local places. Later on, once or twice a year, as well, to a really nice place.

When I was young, however, it was the Log Cabin or Belsome's on the West Bank.

Every weekend.

Friday and Saturday night

Was our family time as my dad worked night shift during the week.

Looking back it was definitely excessive and a waste of a lot of money but it’s just what we did

As a kid, probably 3-4 times per year if we're excluding fast food. Even that wasn't very often.

We eat out about once per month, excluding fast food. We might eat that 2-3 times per month.
