OT electricians question

I have a non-working outlet under my sink for the disposal. I tried using a line sniffer, but it does not work. It gives me an error on continuity.
How do you determine which circuit breaker it is powered by? I don't have a tripped breaker and I replaced the old outlet with new after killing power to the house.
How do you track down which breaker it is on if there is no power on the line and a sniffer won't work?

Do you have power to the switch?
Also, home garden board will be much more helpful

Did you turn it off and back on OP

sometimes it's hard to tell if a breaker has tripped. I've seen some that aren't that out of position and still be tripped. really eyeball those closely

Turn off main breaker, reset all breakers, turn main breaker back on, see if it has juice.

Just flip breakers until the light goes out in the kitchen.
Also, the wiring to the outlet has a direct short. That's the only way your sniffer wouldn't work.
Did this just start happening?

I'm not sure I quite understand, but it sounds like you have a disposal on a switch and the outlet to the disposal is not working? Your issue is likely at your switch? Sometimes a disposal is on its own breaker because the dishwasher is also on it.
Many times the wiring under the sink outlet is one hot for the dishwasher and one on the switch for the disposal. So make sure that's not the case?
Have you put a volt meter to the outlet? How do you know the outlet is bad?
Easiest way OP, is plug in something like a lamp into the outlet and then turn the breakers off one by one until the lamp goes out.

Agree with others to test the switch.
Don’t forget there may be a reset button on the disposal.
Wiggle all the breakers. They are often tripped while looking “on”

quote:Dishwasher works. The switch does not turn the disposal on, and there is also a light switch in the same box that does work.

Possibility that the switch is bad? Hmm. Had not considered that. I can check it. Thanks.

As mentioned above, check the reset switch on disposal. It may have gotten in a bind and tripped.

You know that random switch in your kitchen that no one ever knew what it was for or went to?
Your wife bumped it to off with a sack of groceries a month ago...

Did you check the GFCIs on the kitchen small appliance circuits? The disposal doesn't have to be own its own circuit so they are often run off the multi-wire branch circuit for small appliances that have to be GFCI protected.

Especially on a disposal where its not being unplugged, I'd bet you have a bad switch. Sometimes the switches feel like they are working but have a loose connection.

quote:Yes, I have a Klein tool that tests GFCI circuits. All passed. I will check later today, so maybe the switch itself is bad. 27 years of everyday use.
