Saw it tonight. It was very good and worthy of the praise it’s getting. One of the top Godzilla movies to date, and a very good movie in general.

There had to be a few English subtitle translation issues, though. Kept saying “jet fighter” when talking about the planes, and then there were a couple different things near the end when they were discussing the fancy plane near the end.

Only negative really is the movie is a little overly melodramatic with its main character to the point I was annoyed at him. I felt he was being a selfish shite and I was happy his boss called him out. It was a bit much.

It was supposed to be this way. Very Japanese in the overacting.

I’m just amazed at what Japan can do with $15 million dollars compared to $200 million US dollars. The “Monsterverse” movies are fun in a popcorn movie type of way. Godzilla Minus One had characters you actually cared about. It had tension due to rooting for said characters. Just a better product to me.

Oh and the OG Godzilla theme hit hard when they dropped it. Really well placed

Am I the only one who only knows that theme from the sample used in Charlie's Angel's? I was waiting for Sam Rockwell to start dancing.

Also, can someone explain the title to me? What does Godzilla Minus One mean?

From Here

quote:

In Godzilla Minus One, the term "minus one" is used to represent the film's emotional story, showing how Godzilla returns and causes destruction in Japan, which is already devastated by war. According to Vulture, the title symbolically puts Japan at "zero" and then throws it into an even worse state of desolation at "minus one" when Godzilla appears.

I saw it tonight and enjoyed it. I really love the look and feel of the film.

One thing I found refreshing is the lack of agenda and identity politics. If an American company made this film, there would have been a speech about the atomic bomb and the racism behind it, the main character would have been female and gay, and they would have tried to understand Godzilla's feelings rather than kill him.

Instead, it is just a good movie. They focused on telling a story and succeeded.

Maybe one day US studios will get back to making entertaining movies again.

Saw it last night. Was badass. Maybe one or two parts kind of like huh? But was very good.

Unlike present ones, this one goes back to my childhood of an ancient pissed off lizard attacking anything that moves.

For those that watched, were you waiting for the beat to drop?

I mean, Godzilla is the world’s largest and longest lasting “woke” character.

From nuclear testing, pollution, global warming, devastation of war, etc.

Godzilla himself is a metaphor for nuclear bombing/weapons.

Having a LGTBQ agenda in a movie based in 1940’s and 50’s Japan wouldn’t make sense anyway and you don’t really have that agenda in the legendary Godzilla movies either.

It’s an allegory, not woke.

If Godzilla was woke, it would destroy the city in 5 minutes and then lecture us for an hour and a half about how we’re all to blame for all of society’s ills.

I don't agree with your over expansive definition of woke. Fortunately the movie is better than your post.

Seems you are, at least in this thread.

Toho sued that rapper for sampling without permission. They are very protective of their IP.

Thanks for telling the board that you lack any understanding of what woke means.

‘Woke’ has nothing to do with the man being good stewards of nature and the Earth. Henry David Thoreau, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Godzilla touched on the hazards of the modern industrialized world & mankind losing touch with nature. There’s nothing woke about any of that.

Has any Godzilla movie ever used Blue Oyster Cult's song Godzilla? I've seen them all and don't remember it ever being in one. Maybe a trailer... but not the movie.

I'm actually surprised the movie hasn't made more money (only $52M) after two weeks, considering the buzz.

Yet, anecdotedly, today at noon, I went on the AMC app, and the 3 showings 1:00pm, 4:10, and 7:00pm were already all sold out...on a Monday.

Last full theater I sat in was Avengers Endgame on a weekend in 2019, and I got tix the same day. Godzilla on a Monday? Nope. All sold out.

Laugh if you want, but other than Oppenheimer, that’s the best movie I’ve seen this year.

There are a couple reasons for that. One is the Godzilla theater count started out low at 2308 and slowly rose to its current 2540. It is way behind screen counts of other major films.

Look at the screens these other recent films started out with:

Wish - 3900
Hunger Games - 3776
Napoleon - 3500
Trolls - 3870
Marvels - 4030 (!!!)

Also, it is a foreign language film with subtitles. Unfortunately, a large % of the US population will never watch a film that isnt in English. They are missing out but it is what it is.

Furthermore, there have been a few Godzilla films released recently. This also hurts demand as people have recently seen the giant lizard battling Kong.

When you take all of that into account, the film is doing pretty darn good. I also think it will have good legs.
