I got 2 lab mix puppies from the dog pound when I was on the verge of retirement 8 years ago. Six years ago, I adopted a red heeler that was abandoned in our dog park. Here I am, 74 years old and we go to the dog park every day. Best decision I ever made in acquiring these dogs.
As someone else said, I am at the point where I prefer the company of my dogs over the company of probably 98% of all of the people I have ever met in my life.
I am sorry for your loss and yes it will be difficult. Should you consider getting another dog, please consider getting the animal from the local dog pound.

“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz
So very sorry for your loss, I lost my best girl 2 months ago, everyday gets easier then it will hit you out of nowhere

RIP to your dog, but good lord what an awful name
It's a character's name from The Hobbit. Her brother's name is Frodo. Apologies for being a nerd.

So sorry, brother. That shite hurts, but be strong for those around you.
Beorn was a beautiful dog. She just looks like had a great big heart for the fam.
No doubt she will be deeply missed.

Been there… it’s just awful… had to put my
Boy down in 21 right after Ida. I was a mess then and that didn’t help. Only saving Grace was that I still had his sister. They had never been separated from birth.
