I missed it earlier this month and didn't see a thread about it but John Parry on ESPN just mentioned that the competition committee will look at it this offseason and Rapoport tweeted about it a few weeks ago:
quote:

Ian Rapoport
@RapSheet
NFL executive Troy Vincent says at the league meeting, among other things, that the league will take a look at plays where the player fumbles through the end zone(!).

Is it too punitive? “Do we need to give them a chance again?”

It will be studied this offseason.

Give the “recovering” team the ball at the 1.

It gives offensive players incentive to be careful with the ball, you will see a lot more reckless reaching if it’s just going to go out the side of the end zone.

Second dumbest rule in all of sports.

Dumbest rule is a batter gets a chance to run to first base after a dropped strike 3

Jesus.

No need to change the rule.

Why award the offense for fricking up?

It does “feel” wrong that in all other circumstances where a player fumbles the ball forward and it goes out of bounds, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble. Yet this one results in a turnover.

Yet at the same time, fumbling through the end zone has always carried with it this penalty.

I like keeping it as is, but I definitely understand the argument.

Yeah it needs to be changed to possession at the 20 going in to score. Shouldn’t go to the other team

Why? Because of fantasy football?

It you’re gonna give the offense that big of a boost at least offset it with capping the spot fouls on PIs, especially the somewhat tricky tack ones.

If someone pulls someone down fine. But there is NOTHING worse that a 50 yard call because of some hand fighting late in a game that essentially hands the game to a team.

Why should that team have to kickoff after

Every rule favors offense. Keep it. Makes things interesting.

But the stupid spot of the foul rule on DPI gets to stay forever. Ticky tack contact with the receiver = 35 yard penalty ... punch a guy in the face = 15-yard penalty.

Protect the football at the goal line.

The rule is fine as it is.
