When it gets in the 20’s at my house there is no saving the trunk on mine it seems. They start to sour and rot. I usually just cut them back to the ground after the freeze is over. Seems like one time I was lazy and took a while to cut them back and they just started to fall over / “melt down “ if I remember right.
