Not hyperbolic at all. Most people hadn't followed Saban's career in the NFL previous to his time at Michigan State, either. The NFL teams were trying to hire him for almost the entire time he was at LSU, and not solely based on what he did at LSU.

I just think most fans weren't really paying attention until he was hired at LSU.

Funny story, right before LSU won the title in 2003, a Michigan State alumni was like "you can have him, he didn't impress me that much"

When was the last time it was obvious Fans, even ADs, know little about athletics.

The underrated thing that happened with all this is the news that Saban will still be around at Bama.

I just got off the phone with my buddy, who is a huge Alabama fan and a retired HS coach, and we just spoke out that. He stated he thought Saban staying around, even just having an office, was a horrible idea.

He stated no coach wants to take over and still have the former coach looking over his shoulder, especially when it's Saban. He was shocked when he heard that Saban would have full access to the players, which he thought made no sense.

He thought it was best for Saban to move to his new Florida home and truly retire and leave the program alone. He said what if Saban disagreed with what he saw going on, who are the higher ups going to listen to the real HC or Saban?

I don’t think Saban will hang around, looking over the new coach’s shoulder. They left him an office, which is a nice honor. He’s not gonna be sitting in that office all day. He’s going to be at is 17 million dollar lake house in Jupiter Florida. Saban knows the drill. If he wanted to hang around, he would still be the head coach.

What is this crap? I got news for you this guy is the best coach they could have possibly hired! Just sooos you know the state of Washington doesn’t have very much talent pouring out of their high schools in addition not a lot of Cal kids want to put up with 9 months of Rain each year either. So given what he had to work with and the players available to him Debors did one hell of a job there. Not to mention Saban is still around and he will be available at anytime to give him advice as well. Alabamas commitment to winning is second to none by the way let me throw out a name for you. Paul Bryant Jr! He’s still there too!

Their head coach is 2-0 against Lanning with far lesser talent.
Think they’re ok.

Deboer will be the scapegoat for other coaches that did not want to follow Sabans outstanding career at Bama. 2 seasons and he will be done

The coach from Liberty was the better choice. They’ll come to regret that later.

While the hire of DeBoer doesn't cause as many questions as when UCLA hired the coach from UAB (Bartow) to replace the retiring John Wooden, having to replace a coaching legend is pretty much a no-win situation.

DeBoer made the money grab move to a situation likely better than had he stayed at UW while transitioning to the BIG. UW will never pay the kind of money as a top SEC program (win, lose or draw). If the Huskies stumble in the BIG, he likely won't ever collectively earn what will be laid out for him at this time. Cost of living in Alabama is likely about one third of that in Seattle to boot.

Sonny Dykes did the same thing the year before. How's he doing these days?

Remember when Bama used to brag about having Dabo in the wings? Like they’d just reload without missing a beat after Saban. Not.

Now they go out and deboer who is probably a good coach but he’s not likely to have to same success as Saban which is what the fans want.
Like us they want to believe that it’s the school that makes coaches successful.
It took me some time to realize but Saban is the reason.

Anyone coming in to fill his spot is likely to have a relatively worse record.
The expectations are just too high.

They’ve got to burn through a few coaches before the Saban comparisons can calm.

Saban will not be around. That is propaganda to try to get the kids that are there to not transfer and give the new coach a chance before a mass exodus.

Also the kids who just signed probably feel mislead and trying to make them think Saban will be around so kids and parents don’t complain they were lied to by SABAN in the national press to tarnish the legacy

Sabam just bought a 17 million home in Florida. You think he will be in Tuscaloser?

He will replace corso on game day

you think that automatically means he's a great coach?

Hell, Sonny Dykes played for a title last year too.

And Gene Chizik, Larry Coker (and Ed Orgeron) actually won titles. And they're bad coaches.

Merely having a great year or two doesn't mean a coach is great. Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle with a Cam Newton, Joe Burrow, etc.

Or Michael Penix and some great receivers.

I never said he was a horrible coach, but the hiring of him has a lot of Alabama fans very concerned for a number of reasons.

* 64% of his wins came when he was a NAIA HC
* he's only been a D1 HC for four years
* he's a West coach guy, never coached in south
* he comes from a passing conference/no defense
* Washington had the 96th ranked defense nationally
* has no ties to the SEC
* never recruited in the south
* he's only won 1 conference title as a D1 HC and that was this year in the Pac-12
* he finished 5th in Mountain West as Fresno HC

Judging from those stats, I completely understand why many Alabama fans are very concerned about the hire!

If I was an alabama fan, I’d be more concerned with WHY Saban left than anything else

Saban didn’t get tired of coaching; he knows that the landscape does not favor towns like Tuscaloosa. He knows that coaching there is not going to produce the fruit that he demands.

Hate to say it but the same can be said about Baton Rouge. Heck, lots of sec schools in relatively small areas are going to feel hamstrung by the NIL/portal noose.

It really doesn't matter who roams the sidelines for Bama. The SEC will continue to tilt everything in their favor on and off the field. They may just have to be more blatant about it now (if that's possible) if there is a gap.

With the 12 team playoff, Bama can lose 4 games a season and still be in contention. There is a lot of cushion for them to still succeed, and when they inevitably lose (they always did with Saban), the SEC and media will still be there to save them.

Well said. Nothing will really change. The REC will still white knight for Bama, regardless of who is coaching them. All the 12-team playoff does is virtually assure that they will be in the mix every year. While the jury is still out on DeBoer, they seem to be hitting one home run after another hiring assistant coaches. We're about to get stuck with the OC they've been trying to unload for over a year.
