I would strongly recommend renting for the first year. I've lived all over and New Orleans is like no where else I've ever lived. Even the neighborhoods everyone is mentioning a different. Each one has their own personality. If you rent you can get to know all of the different parts of town and where you want to be. Plus interest rates are coming down a bit in the Fall so you might get more bang for your buck if you wait to buy.
