This hurts: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos are hiring more staff away from the Saints, this time poaching Jeff Ireland’s right-hand man.
Cody Rager spent nine years in New Orleans as a West Coast area scout before being bumped up to the national level, and he was promoted in 2021 to work as assistant college scouting director. He’s now leaving for a new role in Denver’s front office.
Payton took a number of longtime Saints assistants with him to the Broncos last offseason. Rager is just the latest departure, but he’s an impactful loss. With the roster getting older and the team short on draft picks, New Orleans needs all the help it can get in evaluating this year’s prospects to add the right players to the team. Hopefully they can find a capable replacement already on staff.

Hopefully he "steals" Thomas next

Is it really stealing if the Saints buy the plane ticket though?

Don't forget to see how he did the 9 years scouting the West Coast:
2012-2020
2020: No West coast draft picks
2019: No West coast draft picks
2018: No West coast draft picks
2017: Marcus Williams (Is Utah close enough to be covered by a West Coast Scout) 2nd Rd from Utah
2016: Daniel Lasco - 7th Rd from Cal
2015: Peat - 1st Rd Stanford
2015: Kikaha - 2nd round Wash
2015: Tyler Davidson - 5th Rd Fresno St
2014: Cooks - 1st Rd Oregon St
2014: Fortt - 4th Rd Cal
2013: No West coast draft picks
2012: No West coast draft picks
I guess that promotion was for his scouting work he did on players we passed on

He’s a scout, he’s not making the decision on which player to draft.

Scouts can champion guys but they ultimately aren't making the draft pick. We have no idea what guys Rager liked and didn't like for us as outsiders to evaluate him ourselves.
I don't know if it's done or not, but internally scout grades can be compared later to actual professional grades to see who does a good job. What team top 10 graded player did a scout give a second round grade to and then the player busted? What fifth round did a scout grade in third round that turned into a pro-bowl player? Teams should know this stuff internally.

Maybe they'll actually draft football players now instead of "projects" with "upside" because they are "just injury prone"

It is sad in a way that Payton has been in the league for over two decades combined between being an assistant and HC and all his contacts can do is put the old band back together.
No vision of watching other talent and wanting to bring in what they are doing to the mix.

The Saints love wasting 4 and 5th rounders.
Ian book. Saldiveri. Jake haener. Demarco Jackson.
You can't keep wasting 4th rounders on tiny qbs, that on their best day might be a backup.

He wants to get the band back together.
He needs to upgrade his defense.
I wonder who on the Saints sideline would check both boxes...

Oh no! He’s stealing away the staff and players of a team that couldn’t make the playoffs! Oh no!
Also, it’s like he likes his co-workers and likes the job but would rather do it with the same staff in a place like Denver instead of in a sh!thole like New Orleans. How oh how could he be like that?

Well, we know it wasn't his personel that ran him off.

That’s what coaches do,

Any chance he poaches DA?

I mean, why leave New Orleans if he’s just going to build the same thing he had here?

Exactly, if the last 5 drafts are any indication of talent evaluation....clean house.
