It got her out of the country.

She was on the run in the U.S., and couldn’t use her own identification. By the time authorities tracked her to her sister’s location, and connected the dots, she was already out of the country by using her sister’s passport.

She got to Costa Rica and began using other aliases and identifications. The hardest, most secure ID to fake is a passport.
