Chase has been in a top 2-3 car in the field 95% of the time hes on the track. Look at his braking and acceleration data from his incredible road course performance run... its not that he is just an absolute savant at road courses (though he is very good at them), his car was just capable of things the others weren't. That crew doesn't get half the credit it deserves for road course setups.
You still have to have the requesite talent to be able to take the car it's best possible finish. Just because you have a good ride doesn't automatically equal that you're gonna win/be a top-5 driver week in and week out. You have to have talent to do what needs to be done.
A couple of other posters hit on it last night; he never fully recovered from his leg injury. That and I think it was more Gustafson than a lot of people want to admit. This year will be a big year for him, especially early. If Chase struggles out of the gate, I could see a change at the top.
But I think he is gonna recover bigly this year. He's just too good not to.

I didn't say it did, and he is not top 5 week in and week out anyway. He is actually kind of bad (as in doesn't win much, not actually bad like Cody Ware or something) at mile-and-a-half tracks, which are the majority of the schedule.
Without short tracks and road courses (which both use similar, sometimes the same setups which we already established he benefits from) his career doesn't look that great. If the championship is at like an Atlanta, Charlotte, or Miami I'm not sure he even has one.... he's not beating guys like Larson, KFB, Truex, etc there.
